A vehicle with a primary driveline that is configured to distribute rotary power to a first set of vehicle wheels and a power transmitting device that can be selectively operated to transmit rotary power to a secondary driveline. The power transmitting device has an input member, which is driven by the primary driveline, and an output member that is selectively coupled to the input member to receive rotary power therefrom. The secondary driveline comprises a differential, a pair of shafts, and a side shaft coupling that selectively interrupts power transmission between the differential and one of the shafts.

What is claimed is: 1. A vehicle driveline comprising: a housing assembly; an input pinion received in the housing assembly and rotatable about a first axis; a ring gear received in the housing assembly, the ring gear being meshingly engaged to the input pinion and rotatable about a second axis that is transverse to the first axis; a first output shaft rotatable about the second axis and extending through the ring gear and being configured to drive a first vehicle wheel; a second output shaft rotatable about the second axis and being configured to drive a second wheel; a friction clutch received in the housing assembly and having a clutch input member, a first clutch output member, a second clutch output member, a plurality of first clutch plates, a plurality of second clutch plates, a plurality of third clutch plates and a plurality of fourth clutch plates, the clutch input member being coupled to the ring gear for rotation therewith, the first clutch output member being rotatably coupled to the first output shaft, the second clutch output member being rotatably coupled to the second output shaft, the first and second clutch plates being non-rotatably but axially slidably mounted to the clutch input member, the third clutch plates being non-rotatably but axially slidably coupled to the first clutch output member, the fourth clutch plates being non-rotatably but axially slidably coupled to the second clutch output member, wherein the first and third clutch plates are interleaved with one another, and wherein the second and fourth clutch plates are interleaved with one another; and a linear motor having a motor output member that is selectively movable along the second axis to engage the second and fourth clutch plates to one another and to engage the first and third clutch plates. 2. The vehicle driveline of claim 1 , wherein the linear motor comprises a hydraulic cylinder. 3. The vehicle driveline of claim 2 , wherein the motor output member is a piston. 4. The vehicle driveline assembly of claim 1 , wherein the motor output member is disposed in an annular manner about the second axis. 5. The vehicle driveline of claim 1 , wherein a spacer is disposed between the first and second clutch output members and is movable along the second axis. 6. The vehicle driveline of claim 1 , further comprising a case and a pair of case bearings, the case being coupled to the ring gear for rotation therewith, each of the case bearings directly rotatably coupling the case to the housing assembly such that the case bearings support the case for rotation relative to the housing assembly. 7. The vehicle driveline of claim 1 , further comprising a power take-off unit and a propshaft, the power take-off unit having a PTU output member, the propshaft being rotatably coupled to the PTU output and the input pinion. 8. The vehicle driveline of claim 7 , wherein the power take-off unit has a PTU input member and a PTU coupling that is operable in a first mode, in which rotary power is transmitted between the PTU input member and the PTU output member, and a second mode in which rotary power is not transmitted between the PTU input member and the PTU output member. 9. The vehicle driveline of claim 8 , wherein the PTU coupling is a clutch. 10. The vehicle driveline of claim 8 , wherein the PTU coupling comprise a toothed sleeve that is movable between first and second sleeve positions. 11. The vehicle driveline of claim 10 , wherein the toothed sleeve has a plurality of internal teeth.
