The present invention discloses novel isolates of Neorickettsia risticii , compositions comprising such isolates, vaccines and methods for using such vaccines against Potomac Horse Fever.

We claim: 1. A composition comprising a N. risticii Michigan isolate having the ATCC deposit number PTA-11404; wherein the N. risticii is killed or inactivated. 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the N. risticii is killed or inactivated by a method selected from the group comprising sonication, freeze-thaw techniques, pressure, treatment with heat, a chemical and an enzyme. 3. The composition of claim 2 wherein the chemical is selected from the group consisting of binary ethyleneimine and formalin.
