Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A multi-speed transmission including a plurality of planetary gearsets and a plurality of selective couplers to achieve at least nine forward speed ratios and at least nine reverse speed ratios is disclosed. The plurality of planetary gearsets may include a first planetary gearset, a second planetary gearset, a third planetary gearset, a fourth planetary gearset, and a fifth planetary gearset. The plurality of selective couplers may include a number of clutches and a number of brakes. The multi-speed transmission may have five planetary gearsets and eight selective couplers. The eighth selective couplers may include three clutches and five brakes.

What is claimed is: 1. A transmission comprising: at least one stationary member; an input member rotatable relative to the at least one stationary member; a plurality of planetary gearsets operatively coupled to the input member, each of the plurality of planetary gearsets including a sun gear, a plurality of planet gears intermeshed with the sun gear and carried by a planet carrier, and a ring gear intermeshed with the plurality of planet gears, the plurality of planetary gearsets including a first planetary gearset, a second planetary gearset, a third planetary gearset, a fourth planetary gearset, and a fifth planetary gearset, the input member is fixedly coupled to only the sun gear of the first planetary gearset of the plurality of planetary gearsets; an output member operatively coupled to the input member through the plurality of planetary gearsets and rotatable relative to the at least one stationary member, the output member is fixedly coupled to the fifth planetary gearset of the plurality of planetary gearsets; a plurality of selective couplers, wherein the plurality of selective couplers includes a first number of clutches and a second number of brakes, wherein the second number is five and the first number is two; a first interconnector fixedly coupling a sun gear of a first one of the plurality of planetary gearsets, a sun gear of a second one of the plurality of gearsets and a first clutch of the plurality of selective couplers together, the first clutch of the plurality of selective couplers, when engaged couples the sun gear of the first one of the plurality of planetary gearsets and the sun gear of the second one of the plurality of gearsets to the input member, a second interconnector fixedly coupling a planet carrier of the first one of the plurality of planetary gearsets, a ring gear of the second one of the plurality of gearsets and a second clutch of the plurality of selective couplers together, the second clutch of the plurality of selective couplers, when engaged couples the planet carrier of the first one of the plurality of planetary gearsets and the ring gear of the second one of the plurality of gearsets to the input member; a first brake of the plurality of selective couplers, when engaged, coupling a ring gear of the first planetary gearset to the stationary member; a second brake of the plurality of selective couplers, when engaged, coupling a ring gear of the second planetary gearset to the stationary member; a third brake of the plurality of selective couplers, when engaged, coupling a ring gear of the third planetary gearset to the stationary member; a fourth brake of the plurality of selective couplers, when engaged, coupling a ring gear of the fourth planetary gearset to the stationary member; and a fifth brake of the plurality of selective couplers, when engaged, coupling a planet carrier of the fifth planetary gearset to the stationary member. 2. The transmission of claim 1 , wherein the first planetary gearset is coupled to the second planetary gearset with a third interconnector. 3. The transmission of claim 1 , wherein each of the first planetary gearset, the second planetary gearset, the third planetary gearset, the fourth planetary gearset, and the fifth planetary gearset is a simple planetary gearset. 4. The transmission of claim 1 , wherein the at least one stationary member includes a housing. 5. The transmission of claim 1 , wherein the first one of the plurality of gearsets and the second one of the plurality of gearsets are both positioned between the first planetary gearset and the fifth planetary gearset. 6. The transmission of claim 5 , wherein one of the first one of the plurality of gearsets and the second one of the plurality of gearsets is the third planetary gearset. 7. The transmission of claim 6 , wherein the first planetary gearset is positioned between the first end of the housing and the second planetary gearset; the second planetary gearset is positioned between the first planetary gearset and the third planetary gearset; the third planetary gearset is positioned between the second planetary gearset and the fourth planetary gearset; and the fourth planetary gearset is positioned between the third planetary gearset and the fifth planetary gearset. 8. The transmission of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of selective couplers are selectively engaged in a plurality of combinations to establish nine forward speed ratios and a plurality of reverse speed ratios between the input member and the output member. 9. The transmission of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of selective couplers are selectively engaged in a plurality of combinations to establish a first number of forward speed ratios and a second number of reverse speed ratios between the input member and the output member. 10. The transmission claim 1 , wherein the fifth planetary gearset is coupled to the second one of the plurality of planetary gearsets.
