The present invention relates generally to compositions and methods for treating neurodegenerative diseases and disorders, particularly ophthalmic diseases and disorders. Provided herein are alkoxyl derivative compounds and pharmaceutical compositions comprising these compounds. The subject compositions are useful for treating and preventing ophthalmic diseases and disorders, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and Stargardt's Disease.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for treating diabetic retinopathy in a subject in need thereof comprising administering to the subject a composition comprising a compound, or stereoisomer, N-oxide or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, having the structure: 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is administered to the patient orally. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is orally administered to provide the compound in a daily dose of about 2 mg, about 5 mg, about 7 mg, or about 10 mg. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises (R)-3-amino-1-(3-(cyclohexylmethoxy)phenyl)propan-1-ol hydrochloride.
