Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Fiber-containing polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) prepregs are described that include a first and second plurality of fibers. The second plurality of fibers is made from a different material than the first plurality of fibers. The PMMA prepregs also contain a polymerized resin that includes polymethyl methacrylate that has been formed from a reactive resin composition that includes methyl methacrylate. Methods of making fiber-containing PMMA prepregs are also described.

What is claimed is: 1. A system for manufacturing a polyester-containing prepreg, the system comprising: a fabric supply mechanism that moves a fabric or mat from a starting point to an ending point, the fabric or mat being subjected to a plurality of processes between the starting point and the ending point; a resin applicator that is configured to apply a macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin to the fabric or mat as the fabric or mat is moved past the resin applicator, the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin being in contact with a catalyst upon application of the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin to the fabric or mat, the catalyst facilitating polymerization of the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin to form a polyester polymer; a press mechanism that is configured to press the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin through the fabric or mat as the fabric or mat is moved past or through the press mechanism such that the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin wets the fabric or mat; and a curing oven configured to effect polymerization of the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin to form the polyester-containing prepreg; and wherein the resin applicator is positioned above a lower belt of the press mechanism so that the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin is applied to the fabric or mat as the fabric or mat is passed under the resin applicator and atop the lower belt. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin comprises cyclic butylene terephthalate or cyclic ethylene terephthalate. 3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the polyester polymer comprises polybutylene terephthalate. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the catalyst facilitating polymerization of the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin comprises at least one of an organo-tin compound or an organo-titanate compound. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the catalyst comprises at least one organo-tin compound selected from the group consisting of monoalkyl tin(IV) hydroxide oxides, monoalkyl tin(IV) chloride dihydroxides, dialkyl tin(IV) oxides, bistrialkyl tin(IV) oxides, monoalkyl tin(V) tris-alkoxides, dialkyl tin(IV) dialkoxides, and trialkyl tin(IV) alkoxides. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the catalyst comprises at least one organo-titanate compound selected from the group consisting of titanate tetraalkoxide compounds and tetraalkyl titanate compounds. 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein a fabric supply mechanism moves the fabric or mat in substantially constant movement between the starting point and ending point of the system. 8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system further comprises a fabric pre-heater that heats the fabric or mat above an ambient temperature before the resin applicator applies the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin to the fabric or mat. 9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the fabric pre-heater heats the fabric or mat to a pre-heated temperature of 160° C. to 220° C. before the resin applicator applies the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin to the fabric or mat. 10. The system of claim 1 , wherein a curing oven heats the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin wetted fabric or mat to a temperature ranging from 180° C. to 220° C. to effect the polymerization of the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin. 11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system further comprises a first tank to store and supply the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin to the resin applicator. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the system further comprises a second tank to store and supply the catalyst facilitating polymerization of the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin to the resin applicator. 13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the resin applicator comprises a die to apply the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin to the fabric or mat. 14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to maintain the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin at a temperature at or above a melting temperature for the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin but below a polymerization temperature for the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin before the resin applicator applies the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin to the fabric or mat. 15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the system is configured to maintain the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin at a temperature of 160° C. to 180° C. before the resin applicator applies the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin to the fabric or mat. 16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system further comprises a hood or enclosure that covers and encloses at least a portion of the fabric or mat, wherein the resin applicator is positioned within the hood or enclosure such that the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin is applied to the fabric or mat within the hood or enclosure and macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin vapors are contained within the hood or enclosure. 17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the system further comprises an exhaust mechanism that is configured to remove or ventilate vapors of the macrocyclic polyester oligomer resin within the hood or enclosure. 18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system further comprises a winding mechanism that is configured to wind the polyester-containing prepreg into a roll product after the polyester-containing prepreg exits the curing oven. 19. The system of claim 1 , wherein the press mechanism is a double belt compression press that sandwiches the wetted fabric or mat between the lower belt and an upper belt.
