Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

According to one embodiment, a system for manufacturing a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) prepreg includes a mechanism for continuously moving a fabric or mat and a resin application component that applies a methyl methacrylate (MMA) resin to the fabric or mat. The system also includes a press mechanism that presses the fabric or mat during the continuous movement subsequent to the application of the MMA resin to ensure that the MMA resin fully saturates the fabric or mat. The system further includes a curing oven through which the fabric or mat is continuously moved. The curing oven is maintained at a temperature of between 40° C. and 100° C. to polymerize the MMA resin and thereby form PMMA so that upon exiting the curing oven, the fabric or mat is fully impregnated with PMMA.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of forming a fully impregnated polymethyl methacrylate prepreg comprising: unwinding a fabric or mat from a roller so that the fabric or mat is positioned atop a lower belt of a double belt compression press that is configured to move the fabric or mat between a starting point to an ending point, wherein the fabric or mat is subjected to a plurality of processes and is in substantially constant movement atop the lower belt; mixing a methyl methacrylate (MMA) resin with an initiator to form an MMA resin mixture, the initiator facilitating in polymerizing the MMA resin to form polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA); applying the MMA resin mixture to the fabric or mat as the fabric or mat is moved under a resin application die that is positioned above the fabric or mat, the MMA resin mixture having a viscosity of 10 poises or less, wherein the fabric or mat remains in contact with the lower belt as the resin application die applies the MMA resin mixture to the fabric or mat; sandwiching the fabric or mat between the lower belt and an upper belt of the double belt compression press to press the MMA resin mixture entirely through the fabric or mat such that the MMA resin mixture fully saturates the fabric or mat; and passing the MMA resin mixture coated fabric or mat through a curing oven having a temperature that is maintained at between 40° C. and 100° C. to polymerize the MMA resin and thereby form PMMA, wherein the fabric or mat is in constant movement through the curing oven between the upper belt and the lower belt; wherein upon exiting the curing oven, the fabric or mat is fully impregnated with PMMA. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein mixing the MMA resin with the initiator occurs in a mixing component prior to application of the MMA resin to the fabric or mat. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the MMA resin comprises a mixture of an MMA monomer and a PMMA polymer. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the MMA resin is contained within a holding tank, and wherein the method further comprises heating the holding tank to a temperature between 40 and 80 degrees Celsius. 5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising exhausting vapors within a hood or enclosure via an exhaust component. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising winding the fully impregnated PMMA prepreg into a roll product. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein greater than 95% of the MMA resin is polymerized to form PMMA. 8. A method of forming a fully impregnated polymethyl methacrylate prepreg product comprising: applying a methyl methacrylate (MMA) resin to a fabric or mat as the fabric or mat is moved under a resin application die that is positioned above the fabric or mat, the MMA resin being combined with an initiator that facilitates in polymerizing the MMA resin to form polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA); passing the MMA resin coated fabric or mat through a double belt compression press to fully saturate the fabric or mat with the MMA resin; and passing the MMA resin saturated fabric or mat through a curing oven to polymerize the MMA resin throughout the fabric or mat and thereby form the fully impregnated PMMA prepreg; wherein the fabric or mat is constantly moved during the method via the double belt compression press and wherein the method is completed in a time of less than 10 minutes. 9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising applying the initiator to the fabric or mat so that the MMA resin is combined with the initiator upon application of the MMA resin to the fabric or mat. 10. The method of claim 8 , wherein combining the MMA resin with the initiator comprises mixing the MMA resin and the initiator prior to applying the MMA resin to the fabric or mat. 11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the fabric or mat includes sized fibers having a functional group that covalently bonds with the PMMA resin. 12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the MMA resin comprises a mixture of an MMA monomer and a PMMA polymer. 13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising winding the fully impregnated PMMA prepreg into a roll product. 14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the resin application die is positioned within a hood or enclosure that covers and encloses only a portion of the fabric or mat. 15. The method of claim 8 , wherein the method is completed in a time of less than 5 minutes.
