Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Disclosed is a process and apparatus for switching oligomerization feed between a first oligomerization zone that includes a uni-dimensional small pore zeolite to make more diesel and a second oligomerization zone that includes SPA catalyst for making more gasoline. The diesel can be recycled to make more propylene. The process and apparatus will provide refiners with flexibility to produce the most valuable product commensurate with fluctuating market conditions.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. A process for oligomerizing light olefins comprising: providing a first oligomerization reactor zone containing a zeolitic oligomerization catalyst; providing a second oligomerization reactor zone containing a solid phosphoric acid catalyst; providing an oligomerization feed comprising C 4 olefins and dividing the oligomerization feed into a first feed and a second feed; mixing an oligomerate return stream comprising C 6 + olefins with said first feed to produce a first mixed oligomerization feed; mixing an intermediate recycle stream comprising at least 40 wt % C 5 hydrocarbons with said second feed to produce a second mixed oligomerization feed; feeding said first mixed oligomerization feed to said first oligomerization reactor zone, and feeding said second mixed oligomerization feed to said second oligomerization reactor zone; oligomerizing said first mixed oligomerization feed to yield an a first oligomerized product comprising distillate and oligomerizing said second mixed oligomerization feed to yield an a second oligomerized product comprising gasoline; feeding the first oligomerized product and the second oligomerized product to a debutanizer column; recovering from the debutanizer a first overhead light stream comprising C 4 olefins and hydrocarbons and a first liquid oligomerate bottom stream comprising C 5 + olefins and hydrocarbons; separating said first liquid oligomerate bottom steam into an intermediate stream comprising C 5 olefins and hydrocarbons and a second liquid oligomerate bottom product stream comprising C 6 + olefins; splitting said intermediate stream into said intermediate recycle stream and a purge stream; splitting said second liquid oligomerate bottom product stream into said oligomerate return stream and a distillate separator column feed stream; separating said distillate separator column feed stream in a distillate separator column into a gasoline overhead stream and a distillate bottom stream; and recovering a gasoline product from said gasoline overhead stream and a distillate product from said distillate bottom stream; wherein the overhead pressure in said debutanizer column is maintained between about 300 kPa (gauge) and about 350 kPa (gauge) and the bottom temperature of said debutanizer is maintained between 250° C. to 300° C. to maximize recovering the distillate product; or the overhead pressure in said debutanizer column is maintained between about 525 kPa (gauge) and about 575 kPa (gauge) and the bottom temperature in said debutanizer is maintained between 90° C. to 140° C. to maximize recovering the gasoline product. 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the oligomerization feed further comprises C 5 olefins. 3. The process of claim 1 wherein said zeolitic oligomerization catalyst comprises a ten membered-ring pore zeolitic structure. 4. The process of claim 1 wherein said zeolitic oligomerization catalyst comprises a uni-dimensional pore structure. 5. The process of claim 1 wherein said zeolitic oligomerization catalyst comprises an MTT zeolite.
