Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An oligomerization catalyst, oligomer products, methods for making and using same. The catalyst can include a supported nickel phosphate compound. The catalyst is stable at oligomerization temperatures of 500° C. or higher and particularly useful for making oligomer products containing C4 to C26 olefins having a boiling point in the range of 170° C. to 360° C.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for making light hydrocarbon oligomers, comprising: reacting one or more C 2 to C 12 olefins with a supported nickel phosphate catalyst at a temperature of about 500° C. or higher to provide an oligomer product comprising C 4 to C 26 olefins, wherein the nickel is present in an amount ranging from about 2 wt % to about 20 wt %, based on the total weight of the catalyst, and wherein the support material is silica having a pore size of about 50 Å to about 500 Å, and a surface area of about 100 m 2 /g to about 600 m 2 /g. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more C 2 to C 12 olefins and the supported nickel phosphate catalyst are reacted at a pressure of about 6.8 Bar(g) to about 138 Bar(g). 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more C 2 to C 12 olefins consist essentially of ethylene and propylene. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the oligomer product consists essentially of C 4 to C 26 olefins. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the oligomer product consists essentially of C 12 to C 20 olefins having a boiling point in the range of 170° C. to 360° C. 6. A method for making light hydrocarbon oligomers, comprising: reacting one or more C 2 to C 12 olefins with a supported nickel phosphate catalyst at a temperature of about 500° C. or higher to provide an oligomer product comprising C 4 to C 26 olefins, wherein the support material is amorphous silica and the nickel is present in an amount ranging from about 2 wt % to about 20 wt %, based on the total weight of the catalyst. 7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the reaction temperature is about 525° C. or higher. 8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the one or more C 2 to C 12 olefins and the supported nickel phosphate catalyst are reacted at a pressure of about 6.8 Bar(g) to about 138 Bar(g). 9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the one or more C 2 to C 12 olefins consist essentially of ethylene and propylene. 10. The method of claim 6 , wherein the oligomer product consists essentially of C 4 to C 26 olefins. 11. The method of claim 6 , wherein the oligomer product consists essentially of C 12 to C 20 olefins having a boiling point in the range of 170° C. to 360° C. 12. The method of claim 6 , wherein the amorphous silica support material has a pore size of about 50 Å to about 500 Å. 13. The method of claim 6 , wherein the amorphous silica support material has a surface area of about 100 m 2 /g to about 600 m 2 /g. 14. A method for making light hydrocarbon oligomers, comprising: reacting one or more C 2 to C 12 olefins with a supported nickel phosphate catalyst at a temperature of about 525° C. or higher to provide an oligomer product comprising C 4 to C 26 olefins, wherein the support material is amorphous silica having a pore size of about 50 Å to about 500 Å and wherein the nickel is present in an amount ranging from about 2 wt % to about 20 wt %, based on the total weight of the catalyst. 15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the one or more C 2 to C 12 olefins consist essentially of ethylene and propylene. 16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the oligomer product consists essentially of C 4 to C 26 olefins. 17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the oligomer product consists essentially of C 12 to C 20 olefins having a boiling point in the range of 170° C. to 360° C.
