An air drying auto-oxidizable resin composition comprising components: a) a drier comprising a manganese carboxylate complex, and b) a polymer comprising unsaturated fatty acid residues, wherein the manganese carboxylate complex a) has the following structure I: wherein R 1 ═H, C1-C20 alkyl optionally substituted with heteroatoms, or C6-C20 aryl optionally substituted with heteroatoms; X and Y are independently selected from O and OC(R 3 )O, in which a=4 when X═O, and a=3 when X═OC(R 3 )O, and in which b=4 when Y═O, and b=3 when Y═OC(R 3 )O; R 2 =C1-C20 alkyl optionally substituted with heteroatoms, C6-C20 aryl optionally substituted with heteroatoms, or a polymeric residue; and R 3 ═C1-C20 alkyl optionally substituted with heteroatoms, C6-C20 aryl optionally substituted with heteroatoms, or a polymeric residue.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. An air drying auto-oxidisable resin composition comprising components: a) a drier comprising a manganese carboxylate complex, and b) a polymer comprising unsaturated fatty acid residues selected from the group consisting of alkyds, vinyl polymers, polyurethane resins, hyperbranched resins and mixtures thereof, wherein the manganese carboxylate complex has the following structure (III): wherein R 1 =H or C1-C20 alkyl; and R 2 =C1-C20 alkyl; and wherein the cation of the manganese carboxylate complex is present in an amount of 0.001 wt. % to 0.5 wt. %, based on total solids content of the polymer b). 2. A composition according to claim 1 , wherein the manganese carboxylate complex has the following structure IV: wherein R 2 =C1-C20 alkyl. 3. A composition according to claim 1 , wherein the manganese carboxylate complex has the following structure V: 4. A composition according to claim 1 wherein R 2 is CH 3 . 5. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the composition further comprises a liquid medium selected from the group consisting of water, aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents, aromatic hydrocarbon solvents, ethers, alcohols, ketones, hydroxyl ethers and mixtures thereof. 6. A coating composition comprising the auto-oxidisable resin composition according to claim 1 . 7. A coating composition according to claim 6 which is in a form selected from the group consisting of paints, adhesives, lacquers, inks and varnishes. 8. A substrate coated with a composition according to claim 1 . 9. A method of coating a substrate comprising applying the coating composition according to claim 6 onto a substrate, and drying the coating composition in the presence of air to obtain a coating on the substrate.
