A machine for forming a bonded edge fold on a headliner is disclosed. The headliner includes a ceiling and an edge flange that has a wall section and a backing section. The machine includes a lower die that receives the headliner and an upper die disposed above the lower die. The machine further includes a slide connected to the upper die and at least one actuator operable to move the slide. Movement of the slide causes the slide to engage with the backing section and fold the backing section over the wall section forming a bonded edge fold. A method of forming a headliner is also disclosed.

What is claimed is: 1. A machine for forming an edge fold on a headliner comprising: a lower die supporting the headliner; a heating element connected to the lower die to clamp the headliner to the lower die; a slide connected to an upper die and including folding and clamping faces; and an actuator connected to the slide that pulls the clamping face against a folded over portion of the headliner to compress the headliner forming the edge fold. 2. The machine of claim 1 wherein the clamping face further comprises a curved portion and wherein the lower die further comprises an arcuate portion that cooperates with the curved portion when the slide is pulled. 3. The machine of claim 1 wherein the actuator is operable to advance the slide to push a portion of the headliner over the heating element. 4. The machine of claim 1 wherein the an upper die is disposed above the lower die and is operable to vertically reciprocate relative to the lower die. 5. The machine of claim 4 wherein the upper die includes a downward phase where the upper die moves towards the lower die and engages the clamping face against a portion of the headliner to bend the portion towards the lower die. 6. A machine for forming a bonded edge fold on a headliner, the headliner including a ceiling and an edge flange extending upwardly from the ceiling, the edge flange having a wall section and a backing section, the machine comprising: a lower die that receives the headliner, the lower die having a base that supports the ceiling, and a forming wall that supports the edge flange; an upper die disposed above the lower die to vertically reciprocate relative to the lower die; a heating element attached to the lower die to clamp the wall section to the forming wall and activate an adhesive layer within the edge flange; a slide connected to the upper die that includes a folding face and a clamping face; and at least one actuator operable to advance the slide in a first horizontal direction to engage the folding face with the backing section to bend the backing section substantially parallel to the ceiling, and operable to retract the slide in a second horizontal direction opposite the first direction to pull the clamping face against the backing section to compress the backing section against the wall section to form the bonded edge fold. 7. The machine of claim 6 wherein the at least one actuator is attached to the upper die. 8. The machine of claim 6 wherein the clamping face further comprises: a curved portion and wherein the forming wall further comprises an arcuate portion that cooperates with the curved portion when the slide is retracted in the second horizontal direction. 9. The machine of claim 6 wherein the at least one actuator is a single bidirectional cylinder that is capable of moving the slide in both the first and second horizontal directions. 10. The machine of claim 9 wherein the bidirectional cylinder is a pneumatic cylinder. 11. The machine of claim 6 wherein the at least one actuator further comprises: a second actuator connected to the upper die and operable to engage with the folding face to move the slide in the second horizontal direction and compress the backing section against the wall section. 12. The machine of claim 6 wherein the upper die vertically reciprocates and includes a downward phase where the upper die moves toward the lower die and engages the clamping face against the backing section to bend the backing section towards the wall section. 13. The machine of claim 6 further comprising: a plurality of support members attached to the lower die extending upwardly and substantially normal to the lower die. 14. The machine of claim 13 further comprising: a platform operable to vertically reciprocate along the support members with respect to the lower die, wherein the upper die is supported by the platform. 15. The machine of claim 14 wherein the vertical reciprocation of the platform causes the upper die to vertically reciprocate. 16. The machine of claim 6 wherein the clamping face and the folding face are joined at a common edge.
