Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A panel for a trailer and a method of making the same is provided. The trailer includes a front wall, a rear wall opposite the front wall, a first sidewall, and a second sidewall. The first sidewall is formed by a first continuous laminate panel that extends an entire length of the first sidewall, and the second sidewall is formed by a second continuous laminate panel that extends an entire length of the second sidewall. The first continuous laminate panel and the second continuous laminate panel each comprise a first skin, a second skin opposite the first skin, and a perforated core between the first skin and the second skin.

The invention claimed is: 1. A trailer, comprising: a front wall; a rear wall opposite the front wall; a first sidewall including a first laminate panel; and a second sidewall including a second laminate panel, the first laminate panel and the second laminate panel each comprising: a first edge, a second edge opposite the first edge, a third edge extending between the first edge and the second edge, a fourth edge opposite the third edge, a first skin, a second skin opposite the first skin, and a thermal plastic perforated core between the first skin and the second skin, the thermal plastic perforated core comprising a perforated region and an unperforated region, the perforated region comprising a plurality of rows of apertures formed therethrough, and the unperforated region comprising an aperture-free band extending from the first edge to the second edge and receiving a fastener therethrough, wherein the aperture-free band spans a first distance from the third edge to an edge of an outermost row of apertures of the plurality of rows of apertures, the first distance being from approximately 2.0 inches to approximately 6.0 inches and being greater than a second distance that spans between a center point of adjacent rows of the plurality of rows, and wherein the second distance is measured in a direction parallel to the first distance. 2. The trailer of claim 1 , wherein the thermal plastic perforated core comprises a foamed thermal plastic. 3. The trailer of claim 1 , wherein the first edge is a top edge, the second edge is a bottom edge, the third edge is a front edge and the fourth edge is a rear edge, wherein the outermost row of apertures is a vertical row at the first distance from the front edge and/or the rear edge. 4. The trailer of claim 1 , wherein the first edge is a front edge, the second edge is a rear edge, the third edge is a top edge, and the fourth edge is a bottom edge, wherein the outermost row of apertures is a horizontal row at the first distance from the top edge and/or the bottom edge. 5. The trailer of claim 1 , further comprising an upper rail, wherein the aperture-free band aligns with the upper rail to couple one of the first laminate panel and the second laminate panel to the upper rail via the fastener extending through the aperture-free band and the upper rail. 6. The trailer of claim 1 , wherein the aperture free-band also extends from the third edge to the fourth edge, wherein the aperture-free band spans another first distance from the first edge and/or the second edge to an edge of another of the outermost row of apertures of the plurality of rows of apertures, the other first distance being from approximately 2.0 inches to approximately 6.0 inches and being greater than another second distance that spans between a center point of adjacent rows of the plurality of rows, wherein the other second distance is measured in a direction parallel to the first direction. 7. The trailer of claim 6 , wherein the second distance and the other second distance are equal and the first distance and the other first distance are equal. 8. The trailer of claim 7 , wherein the first edge is a top edge, the second edge is a bottom edge, the third edge is a front edge, and the fourth edge is a rear edge, wherein the first distance is greater than the other first distance and wherein the second distance and the other second distance are equal. 9. The trailer of claim 6 , wherein the unperforated region entirely surrounds the perforated region. 10. The trailer of claim 1 , wherein the first laminate panel and the second laminate panel are each a continuous panel that extends from the front wall to the rear wall. 11. The trailer of claim 1 , wherein the second distance comprises a plurality of different second distances between center points of adjacent rows of the plurality of rows. 12. The trailer of claim 1 , wherein the first skin and the second skin each comprise a metal sheet. 13. A method of continuously forming each of a first laminate panel and a second laminate panel of a trailer, the first laminate panel and the second laminate panel each comprising: a first edge, a second edge opposite the first edge, a third edge extending between the first edge and the second edge, a fourth edge opposite the third edge, a first skin, a second skin opposite the first skin, and a thermal plastic perforated core between the first skin and the second skin, the thermal plastic perforated core comprising a perforated region and an unperforated region, the perforated region comprising a plurality of rows of apertures formed therethrough, and the unperforated region comprising an aperture-free band extending from the first edge to the second edge-and receiving a fastener therethrough, wherein the aperture-free band spans a first distance from the third edge to an edge of an outermost row of apertures of the plurality of rows of apertures, the first distance being from approximately 2.0 inches to approximately 6.0 inches and being greater than a second distance that spans between a center point of adjacent rows of the plurality of rows, and wherein the second distance is measured in a direction parallel to the first distance, the method comprising: forming a hot thermal plastic sheet of material; providing the hot thermal plastic sheet of material to a punch having punch members protruding outwardly therefrom; displacing slugs of material from the hot thermal plastic sheet of material via the punch members, the punch members arranged on the punch to create the perforated region and the non-perforated region; and coupling the first skin and the second skin to opposing surfaces of the hot thermal plastic sheet of material. 14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first skin and the second skin are inner and outer metal sheets.
