A surgical system including a surgical tool and a navigation system for tracking the position of the surgical tool. The surgical tool comprising a housing including a variable speed motor and control module disposed within the housing. The navigation system comprising a navigation console in communication with the control module of the surgical tool, the navigation console may be configured to communicate instructions to the control module of the surgical tool based on the position of the surgical tool relative to a defined zone. The navigation console may be configured to deactivate the surgical tool based on the position of the surgical tool relative to the defined zone. The navigation console may also be configured to provide a user-selectable override option to allow continued operation of the surgical tool within the defined zone.

What is claimed is: 1. A surgical system comprising: a surgical tool comprising a handpiece housing and a power generating unit disposed in the handpiece housing for actuating a surgical accessory coupled to power generating unit to perform a surgical task; a surgical navigation system configured to track a position of the surgical tool relative to a defined boundary; and a wireless transceiver removably connectable to the handpiece housing for receiving wireless signals that control operation of the power generating unit, wherein, based on the tracked position of the surgical tool relative to the defined boundary, the surgical navigation system is configured to communicate a signal to the wireless transceiver that limits operation of the power generating unit of the surgical tool. 2. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the surgical tool is a cordless surgical tool, and further comprising a tool battery removably attached to the handpiece housing that is configured to supply power to the power generating unit and the wireless transceiver during operation of the surgical tool. 3. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the surgical tool further comprises contacts proximate the handpiece housing for engaging corresponding contacts coupled to the wireless transceiver when the wireless transceiver is connected to the handpiece housing, at least one of the contacts of the surgical tool being configured to receive signals from the wireless transceiver that control operation of the power generating unit. 4. The surgical system of claim 3 , wherein the surgical tool further comprises a tool control processor disposed in the handpiece housing and coupled to the at least one contact of the surgical tool and the power generating unit, and the wireless transceiver is configured to, responsive to receiving the signal communicated from the surgical navigation system, communicate a corresponding signal to the tool control processor through the at least one contact that causes the tool control processor to limit the operation of the power generating unit of the surgical tool. 5. The surgical system of claim 3 , wherein the contacts of the surgical tool are further configured to supply power from a power source for the surgical tool to the wireless transceiver when the wireless transceiver is connected to the handpiece housing. 6. The surgical system of claim 5 , wherein the surgical tool is a cordless surgical tool, and further comprising the power source with the power source being a tool battery removably attachable to the handpiece housing. 7. The surgical system of claim 1 , further comprising a tracker removably connectable to the handpiece housing, wherein the tracker includes the wireless transceiver and is configured to emit light signals that are detected by the surgical navigation system to determine the position of the surgical tool relative to the defined boundary. 8. The surgical system of claim 7 , wherein the surgical tool further comprises contacts proximate to the handpiece housing for engaging corresponding contacts of the tracker when the tracker is connected to the handpiece housing, at least one of the contacts of the surgical tool being configured to receive signals from the wireless transceiver of the tracker for controlling operation of the power generating unit. 9. The surgical system of claim 8 , wherein the contacts of the surgical tool are further configured to supply power from a power source for the surgical tool to the wireless transceiver of the tracker when the tracker is connected to the handpiece housing. 10. The surgical system of claim 9 , wherein the surgical tool is a cordless surgical tool, and further comprising the power source with the power source being a tool battery removably attachable to the handpiece housing. 11. A surgical system comprising: a surgical tool comprising a handpiece housing and a power generating unit disposed in the handpiece housing for actuating a surgical accessory coupled to the power generating unit to perform a surgical task; and a powered auxiliary unit removably connectable to the handpiece housing, wherein the surgical tool is configured to supply power from a power source for the surgical tool to the power generating unit and to the auxiliary unit during operation of the surgical tool, and wherein the auxiliary unit is a tracker configured to emit light signals from the power supplied by the surgical tool, the light signals for being detected by a navigation system to track a position of the surgical tool relative to a surgical site. 12. The surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the surgical tool is a cordless surgical tool, and the power source is a tool battery removably attachable to the handpiece housing. 13. The surgical system of claim 12 , further comprising the tool battery removably attachable to the handpiece housing. 14. The surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the surgical tool further comprises contacts proximate the handpiece housing for engaging corresponding contacts of the tracker when the tracker is connected to the handpiece housing, the contacts of the surgical tool being configured to supply power from the power source for the surgical tool to the tracker. 15. The surgical system of claim 14 , wherein at least one the contacts of the surgical tool is configured to receive signals from the tracker for controlling actuation of the power generating unit. 16. The surgical system of claim 14 , wherein the tracker comprises a wireless transceiver for receiving signals from a remote system for controlling operation of the power generating unit, and at least one of the contacts of the surgical tool is configured to receive signals from the wireless transceiver that control operation of the power generating unit and correspond to the signals received from the remote system. 17. A surgical system comprising: a surgical tool comprising a handpiece housing and a power generating unit disposed in the handpiece housing for actuating a surgical accessory coupled to the power generating unit to perform a surgical task; and a powered auxiliary unit removably connectable to the handpiece housing, wherein the surgical tool is configured to supply power from a power source for the surgical tool to the power generating unit and to the auxiliary unit during operation of the surgical tool, and wherein the surgical tool is configured to: determine whether the auxiliary unit is connected to the handpiece housing; and responsive to determining that the auxiliary unit is connected to the handpiece housing, supply the power from the power source for the surgical tool to the auxiliary unit. 18. An auxiliary unit for use with a surgical tool including a handpiece housing and a power generating unit disposed in the handpiece housing for actuating a surgical accessory coupled to power generating unit to perform a surgical task, the auxiliary unit comprising: a wireless transceiver configured to receive a signal from a surgical navigation system that includes an instruction to limit operation of the power generating unit of the surgical tool based on a tracked position of the surgical tool relative to a defined boundary, wherein the auxiliary unit is configured to be removably connected to the handpiece housing, and the wireless transceiver is configured to, responsive to receiving the signal communicated from the surgical navigation system when the auxiliary unit is connected to the handpiece housing, communicate a corresponding signal to the surgical tool that causes the surgical tool to limit the op
