A cathode active material includes a lithium composite oxide having a crystal structure which belongs to a layered structure. The lithium composite oxide has a BET specific surface area of not less than 5 m 2 /g and not more than 10 m 2 /g. The lithium composite oxide has an average particle size of not less than 3 μm and not more than 30 μm. The lithium composite oxide, an average crystallite size calculated by an X-ray diffraction method is not less than 150 Å and not more than 350 Å.

The invention claimed is: 1. A cathode active material comprising: a lithium composite oxide having a crystal structure which belongs to a layered structure, wherein: the lithium composite oxide has a BET specific surface area of not less than 5 m 2 /g and not more than 10 m 2 /g, the lithium composite oxide has an average particle size of not less than 3 μm and not more than 30 μm, in the lithium composite oxide, an average crystallite size calculated by an X-ray diffraction method is not less than 150 Å and not more than 350 Å, and the lithium composite oxide includes at least one selected from the group consisting of F, Cl, N, and S. 2. The cathode active material according to claim 1 , wherein the lithium composite oxide has an average particle size of not less than 10 μm and not more than 30 μm. 3. The cathode active material according to claim 1 , wherein the lithium composite oxide has a BET specific surface area of not less than 7.5 m 2 /g and not more than 8.1 m 2 /g. 4. The cathode active material according to claim 1 , wherein the lithium composite oxide includes Mn. 5. The cathode active material according to claim 1 , wherein the lithium composite oxide includes F. 6. The cathode active material according to claim 1 , wherein an average composition of the lithium composite oxide is represented by the following composition formula (1): Li x Me y O α Q β Formula (1) where, Me is at least one selected from the group consisting of Mn, Co, Ni, Fe, Cu, V, Nb, Mo, Ti, Cr, Zr, Zn, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Pt, Au, Ag, Ru, W, B, Si, P, and Al; Q is at least one selected from the group consisting of F, Cl, N, and S; and the composition formula (1) satisfies the following conditions: 1.05≤x≤1.5; 0.6≤y≤1.0; 1.2≤α≤2.0; and 0<β≤0.8. 7. The cathode active material according to claim 6 , wherein Me includes at least one selected from the group consisting of Mn, Co, Ni, Fe, Cu, V, Ti, Cr, and Zn. 8. The cathode active material according to claim 7 , wherein Me includes at least one selected from the group consisting of Mn, Co, Ni, and Al. 9. The cathode active material according to claim 8 , wherein Me includes Mn. 10. The cathode active material according to claim 9 , wherein a ratio of Mn to Me is not less than 59.9 mol %. 11. The cathode active material according to claim 6 , wherein Q includes F. 12. The cathode active material according to claim 1 , wherein the cathode active material includes the lithium composite oxide as a main component. 13. The cathode active material according to claim 1 , wherein the lithium composite oxide is a multi-phase mixture including a first phase having a crystal structure which belongs to a space group C2/m and a second phase having a crystal structure which belongs to a space group R-3m. 14. The cathode active material according to claim 13 , wherein the lithium composite oxide is a two-phase mixture of the first phase and the second phase. 15. A battery, comprising: a cathode including a cathode active material according to claim 1 ; an anode; and an electrolyte. 16. The battery according to claim 15 , wherein the anode includes at least one selected from the group consisting of (i) an anode active material capable of occluding and releasing lithium ions and (ii) a material from which a metal lithium is dissolved into the electrolyte during discharge and onto which the metal lithium is deposited during charge; and the electrolyte is a non-aqueous electrolyte liquid. 17. The battery according to claim 15 , wherein the anode includes at least one selected from the group consisting of (i) an anode active material capable of occluding and releasing lithium ions and (ii) a material from which a metal lithium is dissolved into the electrolyte during discharge and onto which the metal lithium is deposited during charge; and the electrolyte is a solid electrolyte.
