Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A drug delivery device includes a blunt cannula and a reservoir. The blunt cannula has a cylindrical wall that defines an axial passage between a first end and a second end of the blunt cannula. The wall has at least a first tapered region at the first end to define an opening in fluid communication with the axial passage and adapted at the first end to resist interruption of fluid flow through the axial passage and out of the first end of the blunt cannula. The reservoir is connected to the second end of the blunt cannula.

First claim

We claim: 1. A drug delivery device comprising: a housing; a blunt cannula having: a cylindrical wall that defines an axial passage between a first end and a second end of the blunt cannula, the wall having at least a first tapered region at the first end to define an opening in fluid communication with the axial passage, and at least one side port formed in the wall to resist interruption of fluid flow through the axial passage and out of the first end of the blunt cannula, each of the at least one side port being disposed adjacent to or within the first tapered region at the first end of the blunt cannula; a reservoir, disposed in the housing, operable to be in fluid communication with the second end of the blunt cannula; a needle or connector fluidly connecting the blunt cannula and the reservoir; and a hub coupled with the second end of the blunt cannula, the hub at least partially surrounding at least a portion of the needle or connector. 2. The drug delivery device according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one side port comprises a pair of side ports. 3. The drug delivery device according to claim 2 , wherein the pair of side ports are aligned with each other across the axial passage. 4. The drug delivery device according to claim 2 , wherein each side port of the pair of side ports comprises a respective circular opening formed in the wall to permit flow transverse to the axial passage. 5. The drug delivery device according to claim 4 , wherein the pair of side ports are aligned with each other across the axial passage. 6. The drug delivery device according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one side port comprises a circular opening formed in the wall to permit flow transverse to the axial passage. 7. The drug delivery device according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one side port comprises an elongated slit formed in the wall to permit flow transverse to the axial passage. 8. The drug delivery device according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one side port comprises an elongated slot formed in the wall to permit flow transverse to the axial passage. 9. The drug delivery device according to claim 1 , wherein the first tapered region comprises at least one bevel. 10. The drug delivery device according to claim 9 , the at least one bevel extending only partially across the first tapered region. 11. The drug delivery device according to claim 1 , further comprising an auto-injector, microinfuser, or infusion pump having a barrel and a plunger disposed within the barrel to define the reservoir. 12. The drug delivery device according to claim 1 , wherein disposed in the reservoir is a volume of one of: (i) an erythropoiesis stimulating agent, (ii) a granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, (iii) a TNF blocker, (iv) a pegylated granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, (v) an interleukin-receptor specific antibody, (vi) an IGF-receptor specific antibody, (vii) a TGF-specific antibody, (viii) GLP-1, and (ix) a sclerostin antibody. 13. The drug delivery device according to claim 1 , wherein the cylindrical wall of the blunt cannula connects the first end of the blunt cannula and the second end of the blunt cannula at an obtuse angle relative to each other. 14. The drug delivery device according to claim 1 , the at least one side port comprising a pair of circular side ports disposed within the first tapered region at the first end of the blunt cannula. 15. The drug delivery device according to claim 1 , wherein the hub is fixedly connected to the second end of the cannula, the hub having a larger outer diameter or dimension than that of the second end of the cannula. 16. The drug delivery device according to claim 1 , wherein the blunt cannula is configured to be introduced into the skin of a patient at an angle that is substantially perpendicular to the skin of the patient. 17. The drug delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one side port is configured to increase a surface area of tissue exposed to fluid flow as compared to a configuration of the blunt cannula without the at least one side port. 18. The drug delivery device of claim 1 , comprising a drive operatively coupled to the reservoir to move fluid from the reservoir through the blunt cannula. 19. The drug delivery device of claim 18 , wherein the reservoir comprises a barrel and a plunger disposed at least partially in the barrel, and the drive is configured to move the plunger relative to the barrel to move the fluid from the reservoir through the blunt cannula. 20. The drug delivery device of claim 19 , wherein the drug delivery device is an on-body pump. 21. The drug delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the drug delivery device is an on-body pump or a wearable drug delivery device. 22. A wearable drug delivery device comprising: a housing having an outer surface attachable to skin of a patient, an opening being formed in the outer surface of the housing; a blunt cannula having a cylindrical wall that defines an axial passage between a first end and a second end of the blunt cannula, the first end having a closed tip, the wall having a first tapered region at the first end, the wall having at least one side opening in fluid communication with the axial passage adapted to resist interruption of fluid flow through the axial passage and out of the first end of the blunt cannula; and a reservoir operable to be in fluid communication with the second end of the blunt cannula during drug delivery, wherein the blunt cannula is initially retracted within the housing and subsequently deployed through the opening in the outer surface of the housing for introduction into the skin of the patient in an operative state, and wherein an outer surface of the blunt cannula frictionally engages and drags the skin of the patient upon introduction of the blunt cannula into the skin of the patient such that introduction of the blunt cannula into the skin of the patient causes tenting in the skin of the patient. 23. The drug delivery device according to claim 22 , the opening in the outer surface of the housing having a diameter that is less than twice a diameter of the cannula. 24. The drug delivery device according to claim 22 , wherein the at least one side opening comprises a pair of side openings. 25. The drug delivery device according to claim 24 , wherein the pair of side openings are aligned with each other across the axial passage. 26. The drug delivery device according to claim 24 , wherein each side opening of the pair of side openings comprises a respective circular opening formed in the wall to permit flow transverse to the axial passage. 27. The drug delivery device according to claim 26 , wherein the pair of side openings are aligned with each other across the axial passage. 28. The drug delivery device according to claim 27 , wherein each side opening of the pair of side openings is disposed within the first tapered region at the first end of the blunt cannula. 29. The drug delivery device according to claim 22 , wherein the at least one side opening comprises a circular opening formed in the wall to permit flow transverse to the axial passage. 30. The drug delivery device according to claim 22 , wherein the at least one side opening comprises an elongated slit formed in the wall to permit flow transverse to the axial passage.
