Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The invention, provides a method, apparatus and system for separating blood and other types of cellular components, and can be combined with holographic optical trapping manipulation or other forms of optical tweezing. One of the exemplary methods includes providing a first flow having a plurality of blood components; providing a second flow; contacting the first flow with the second flow to provide a first separation region; and differentially sedimenting a first blood cellular component of the plurality of blood components into the second flow while concurrently maintaining a second blood cellular component of the plurality of blood components in the first flow. The second flow having the first blood cellular component is then differentially removed from the first flow having the second blood cellular component. Holographic optical traps may also be utilized in conjunction with the various flows to move selected components from one flow to another, as part of or in addition to a separation stage.

First claim

It is claimed: 1. An apparatus to identify at least one selected component from a plurality of components in a fluid mixture, the apparatus comprising: a sorting channel having a first inlet into which a first flow is introduced, the first flow which contains the plurality of component, a second inlet into which a secondary flow is introduced, a first outlet from which the first flow exit, and a second outlet from which at least a portion of the secondary flow exits; a region within the sorting channel, wherein a physical design of the region constricts the first flow and aligns the plurality of components, wherein the physical design of the region comprises a physical narrowing of a diameter in the region in a first direction; wherein the constriction of the first flow in the first direction is unaided by the secondary flow; wherein the selected component exits the apparatus through the second outlet; and wherein the unselected component exits the apparatus by an outlet other than the second outlet of the sorting channel. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the region constricts a width of the flow as the flow travels through the region. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the physical design exerts a pressure acting on the first flow. 4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the pressure is orthogonal to the direction of the first flow. 5. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the pressure centers the plurality of components towards the center of the width of the flow. 6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first flow travels through the channel without aid of the secondary flow and wherein the channel is the sole channel for fluidic flow. 7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first flow travels through the channel without aid of the secondary flow of a sheath fluid or a buffer fluid. 8. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprises a detector apparatus, wherein the detector apparatus determines a characteristic of each component among the plurality of components. 9. The apparatus of claim 8 , further comprises a selection apparatus, wherein each component is selected or unselected based on the characteristic of each component.
