Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Various implementations include a light bar system for a steering wheel of a vehicle that includes a high intensity light source, a light diffusing layer, and an outer lens. For example, in certain implementations, the light diffusing layer is disposed between a plurality of high intensity light emitting diodes (LEDs) and an outer lens, and the light diffusing layer causes the light from the LEDs to appear as a continuous stream of light across a length of the lens and provides sufficiently bright lighting to warn or communicate with the driver in various ambient lighting conditions. In certain implementations, the outer lens is colored to blend in with the rest of the steering wheel when the LEDs are not activated.

The invention claimed is: 1. A light bar system for a steering wheel comprising: a carrier including: a base sized and configured to be disposed adjacent an armature of a steering wheel, the base extending between two opposing outer side walls, two opposing inner side walls extending from the base in a direction toward a front surface of the carrier to form a light optimizing channel, the light optimizing channel provided between the outer side walls, and the outer side walls each extending in a first direction toward the front surface of the carrier and in a second direction away from the distal end of the light optimizing channel, wherein the carrier is sized and configured to couple to an armature of a steering wheel via a clip. 2. The light bar system of claim 1 , wherein the light optimizing channel formed by the inner side walls defines a substantially U-shaped channel in cross-section, wherein an outer surface of each of the inner side walls forming an arcuate shape to follow an outer contour of a steering wheel. 3. The light bar system of claim 1 , wherein the clip extends from the base in a direction away from the light optimizing channel, wherein the clip is sized and configured to engage a corresponding armature locking feature provided on an armature of a steering wheel. 4. The light bar system of claim 3 , wherein the clip is disposed inwardly of and spaced apart from the outer side walls of the carrier. 5. The light bar system of claim 3 , wherein the clip includes at least one of an opening and a depression provided in a side wall of the clip to engage the corresponding armature locking feature. 6. The light bar system of claim 5 , wherein the clip includes a rectangular shaped opening in the side wall of the clip. 7. The light bar system of claim 1 , wherein the clip includes a protrusion extending from at least one of the two outer side walls, the protrusion sized and configured to engage a corresponding recess provided on an armature of a steering wheel. 8. The light bar system of claim 1 , wherein the carrier is removably coupled to an armature of a steering wheel via the clip. 9. The light bar system of claim 1 , further including an armature of a steering wheel, the armature including an armature locking feature for engaging the clip, wherein at least one of the two outer side walls extends at least partially around the armature and a front surface of the armature is provided adjacent a back surface of the base of the carrier. 10. The light bar system of claim 9 , wherein the armature locking feature comprises a projection extending from the armature, wherein the clip extends from the base in a direction away from the light optimizing channel, the clip including at least one of an opening and a depression provided in a side wall of the clip sized and configured to engage the projection, wherein, when the projection is engaged with the at least one opening and depression, the carrier is prevented from moving relative to the armature. 11. The light bar system of claim 10 , wherein the projection extends from at least one of an inner and an outer circumferential side surface of the armature. 12. The light bar system of claim 10 , wherein the projection includes a rectangular shaped projection extending from the armature. 13. The light bar system of claim 1 , further including a light source disposed adjacent a proximal end of the light optimizing channel. 14. The light bar system of claim 13 , further including an outer lens disposed adjacent a distal end of the light optimizing channel. 15. The light bar system of claim 14 , wherein the outer lens includes a light diffusing layer configured for diffusing light as it passes therethrough from the inner surface to the outer surface. 16. A light bar system for a steering wheel comprising: at least one light source disposed adjacent a portion of an armature of a steering wheel, the light source comprising at least one light emitting diode (LED); an outer lens; a carrier defining a light optimizing channel extending from the light source towards the outer lens, the carrier including: a base sized and configured to be disposed adjacent an armature of a steering wheel, the base extending between two opposing outer side walls, two opposing inner side walls extending from the base in a direction toward a front surface of the carrier to form a light optimizing channel, the light optimizing channel provided between the outer side walls, and the outer side walls each extending in a first direction toward the front surface of the carrier and in a second direction away from the distal end of the light optimizing channel, a printed circuit board (PCB) on which the at least one LED is disposed, the PCB having an arcuate shape corresponding to an arcuate shape of a front surface of a steering wheel, the PCB located between the base and a proximal end of the light optimizing channel; wherein the carrier is sized and configured to couple to an armature of a steering wheel via at least one of a friction fit, a mechanical fastener, a chemical fastener, and heat staking. 17. The light bar system of claim 16 , wherein the light optimizing channel formed by the inner side walls defines a substantially U-shaped channel in cross-section, wherein an outer surface of each of the inner side walls forming an arcuate shape to follow an outer contour of a steering wheel. 18. The light bar system of claim 16 , wherein the carrier includes a clip for coupling to an armature of a steering wheel, wherein the clip extends from the base in a direction away from the light optimizing channel and is sized and configured to engage a corresponding armature locking feature provided on an armature of a steering wheel. 19. The light bar system of claim 18 , wherein the clip is disposed inwardly of and spaced apart from the outer side walls of the carrier and includes at least one of an opening and a depression provided in a side wall of the clip to engage a corresponding armature locking feature. 20. The light bar system of claim 19 , further including an armature of a steering wheel including projection for engaging the at least one opening and depression provided in the side wall of the clip, wherein, when the projection is engaged with the at least one opening and depression, the carrier is prevented from moving relative to the armature.
