The present invention is directed to a steering apparatus for a vehicle having a including a light element providing indication and warning light signals to the user of the vehicle. The light element can be associated with a PCB mounted to the steering wheel grip for controlling the operation of the light element.

What is claimed is: 1. A steering apparatus for a vehicle comprising: a steering grip configured for gripping to facilitate control of a vehicle, the steering grip being rotatable; a light element associated with a PCB (printed circuit board); the PCB mounted to the steering grip; and a processor disposed on the PCB and in electrical communication with the PCB, the processor configured to direct at least a portion of the operation of the light element in response to receiving information that the vehicle is on, an autonomous driving system is off, and a human touch detection sensor associated with the steering grip does not detect human touch. 2. The steering apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the light element includes a plurality of light emitting sources mounted on the PCB, wherein the processor is further configured to direct at least a portion of the operation of each of the plurality of light emitting sources. 3. The steering apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to direct an on/off illumination of the light element. 4. The steering apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the processor is further configured to direct an illumination pattern of the light element. 5. The steering apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the processor is further configured to direct a frequency of an on/off illumination cycle of the light element. 6. The steering apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to direct the light element intensity. 7. The steering apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the light element includes at least one of a single color LED, a bi-color LED and a tri-color LED, and wherein the processor is configured to direct an illumination color of the light element. 8. The steering apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to receive information from the vehicle. 9. The steering apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the information includes vehicle sensor-based information to detect lane position. 10. The steering apparatus of claim 9 , wherein: the processor is configured to direct at least a portion of the operation of the light element in response to the vehicle sensor-based information to detect lane position of the vehicle; and the operation of the light element is used to indicate a threat level associated with the lane position; and the operation of the light elements include at least one of an on/off illumination, an illumination pattern, a frequency of an on/off illumination cycle, an illumination intensity, and an illumination color. 11. The steering apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the processor is configured to direct at least a portion of the operation of the light element in response GPS information associated a posted speed limit; wherein the operation of the light element is used to indicate a difference between the posted speed limit and a vehicle speed; wherein the operation of the light element includes at least one of an on/off illumination, an illumination pattern, a frequency of an on/off illumination cycle, an illumination intensity, and an illumination color. 12. The steering apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the information includes navigation information. 13. The steering apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the processor is configured to direct at least a portion of the operation of the light element in response to the navigation information; wherein the operation of the light element is used to indicate at least one of a preparation for course change, a course change, and a distance to course change; wherein the operation of the light element includes at least one of an on/off illumination, an illumination pattern, a frequency of an on/off illumination cycle, an illumination intensity, and an illumination color. 14. The steering apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the information includes foreign object proximity information. 15. The steering apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the processor is configured to direct at least a portion of the operation of the light element in response to the foreign object proximity information; wherein the operation of the light element is used to indicate at least one of a presence of a foreign object within a predetermined distance of the vehicle and a distance to the foreign object, wherein the operation of the light element includes at least one of an on/off illumination, an illumination pattern, a frequency of an on/off illumination cycle, an illumination intensity, and an illumination color. 16. The steering apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the information includes at least one of vehicle performance information, general warning information, and course information, wherein the vehicle performance information includes at least one of on/off operation of the vehicle, battery life, fuel level, fuel efficiency, engine RPM, vehicle oversteer, vehicle understeer, steering wheel straight-ahead position, vehicle lateral acceleration, wherein the general warning information includes occupant restraint information, wherein the course information includes at least one of measure of a course remaining, and a measure of the course completed, wherein the processor is configured to direct at least a portion of the operation of the light element in response to the performance information and the general warning information. 17. The steering apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to direct at least a portion of the operation of the light element for decorative effect at vehicle startup. 18. The steering apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the operation of the light element includes at least one of an on/off illumination, an illumination pattern, a frequency of an on/off illumination cycle, an illumination intensity, and an illumination color. 19. The steering apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the light element, the PCB, and the processor are connected in communication with the vehicle at a power source. 20. The steering apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the steering grip comprises a rim coupled to a hub via a plurality of spokes. 21. The steering apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the light element is a first light element, the PCB is a first PCB, the processor is a first processor, and the first PCB is mounted to a first portion of the rim, the apparatus further comprising: a second light element associated with a second PCB, the second PCB being mounted to a second portion of the rim; and a second processor disposed on the second PCB and in electrical communication with the second PCB, the second processor configured to direct at least a portion of the operation of the second light element, wherein the first and second portions of the rim are spaced apart from each other along the circumference of the rim. 22. The steering apparatus of claim 21 , wherein the first portion is a right side portion of the rim and the second portion is a left side portion of the rim. 23. The steering apparatus of claim 21 , further comprising a third portion of the rim on which a third PCB is mounted, a third light element associated with the third PCB, and a third processor disposed on the third PCB and in electrical communication with the third PCB, the third processor configured to direct at least a portion of the operation of the third light element, wherein the first, second, and third portions of the rim are spaced apart from each other along the circumference of the rim.
