Official abstract text for this publication.
The present invention is directed to a steering apparatus for a vehicle having a including a light element providing indication and warning light signals to the user of the vehicle. The light element can be associated with a PCB mounted to the steering wheel grip for controlling the operation of the light element. The PCB may be thermally coupled to a heat exchange component such that heat from the light element is transferred from the PCB to the steering wheel grip.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of illuminating a light element mounted adjacent to a steering grip of a steering apparatus, the method comprising: receiving instructions for controlling at least a portion of the operation of a light element, the instructions received by a steering grip processor; and varying an illumination characteristic of the light element in response to the instructions, wherein the steering grip processor is disposed on a printed circuit board, and the printed circuit board is mounted to the steering grip, and wherein varying the illumination characteristics of the light element occurs in response to receiving information that the vehicle is on, an autonomous vehicle driving system is off, and a human touch detection sensor associated with the steering grip does not detect human touch. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein varying the illumination characteristic includes at least one of an on/off illumination, an illumination pattern, a frequency of an on/off illumination cycle, an intensity, color, and shape. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the light element includes a plurality of light elements, wherein varying the illumination characteristic further includes varying the illumination characteristic for each of the plurality of light elements. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: determining the instructions for controlling operation of the light element based on information received from the vehicle. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the information includes at least one of GPS (global positioning system) information, vehicle performance information, vehicle sensor-based information to detect lane position of the vehicle, and general warning information. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the information includes vehicle sensor-based information to detect lane position of the vehicle, wherein varying the illumination characteristic of the light element is used to indicate a threat level associated with a lane position of the vehicle. 7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the information includes GPS information associated with a posted speed limit and vehicle performance information associated with an actual speed of the vehicle, wherein varying the illumination characteristic of the light element is used to indicate a difference between the posted speed limit and the actual speed of the vehicle. 8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the information includes GPS information associated with navigation of the vehicle, wherein varying the illumination characteristic of the light element is used to indicate at least one of a preparation for course change, a course change, and a distance to course change. 9. The method of claim 5 , wherein the general warning information includes foreign object proximity information, wherein varying the illumination characteristic of the light element is used to indicate at least one of a presence of a foreign object within a predetermined distance of the vehicle and a distance to the foreign object. 10. The method of claim 5 , wherein the vehicle performance information includes at least one of on/off operation of the vehicle, battery life, fuel level, fuel efficiency, engine RPM, vehicle oversteer, vehicle understeer, steering wheel straight-ahead position, vehicle lateral acceleration. 11. The method of claim 5 , wherein the general warning information includes occupant restraint information. 12. The method of claim 5 , wherein the GPS information includes course information, the course information including at least one of measure of a course remaining, and a measure of the course completed. 13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the instructions include varying an illumination characteristic of the light element for decorative effect at vehicle startup. 14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: providing information to the vehicle based on an input received at the steering grip, and determining the instructions for controlling operation of the light element based on information received from a vehicle processor.
