An apparatus and a method are provided for a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) home air filter to remove airborne molecular contaminants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from air within residential spaces. The HVAC home air filter includes a supportive frame having a shape and size suitable to orient the HVAC home air filter within a residential HVAC system. A filter medium is retained within the supportive frame to remove the airborne molecular contaminants and VOCs from air flowing through the residential HVAC system. The filter medium includes a combination of media layers configured to exhibit a relatively high filtration efficiency and a low air pressure drop across the filter medium. The supportive frame includes a plurality of elongate sections and corner sections disposed along perimeter edges of the filter medium to support the filter medium within the residential HVAC system so as direct air through the filter medium.

What is claimed is: 1. An air filter for removing airborne molecular contaminants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from air within residential spaces, the air filter comprising: a filter medium configured to remove contaminants from an air stream flowing through a residential heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC system), the filter medium being configured to remove the airborne contaminants from air flowing through the HVAC system; and a supportive frame having at least an elongate section and a plurality of corner sections having a folded portion configured slidably retain an elongate section and to direct the air stream through the filter medium wherein the corner sections have a folded portion that forms an aperture and a middle portion absent the folds of the folded portion. 2. The air filter of claim 1 , wherein the filter medium comprises one or more media layers disposed between a first screen and a second screen. 3. The air filter of claim 2 , wherein at least one of the first screen and the second screen comprises a rigid material. 4. The air filter of claim 3 , wherein the at least one of the first screen and the second screen is configured to resist bowing of the filter medium due to the air stream. 5. The air filter of claim 1 , wherein the filter medium includes a fiber density that increases in a direction of air flow through the filter medium. 6. The air filter of claim 1 , wherein the filter medium comprises one or more media layers. 7. The air filter of claim 6 , wherein the one or more media layers includes a first media layer comprising a first fiber density and a second media layer comprising a second fiber density. 8. The air filter of claim 7 , wherein the second fiber density is greater than the first fiber density. 9. The air filter of claim 6 , wherein the one or more media layers are configured to minimize a difference in air pressure across the filter medium. 10. The air filter of claim 6 , wherein the one or more media layers are configured to maximize a filtration efficiency of the filter medium. 11. The air filter of claim 1 , wherein the supportive frame is configured to be adjusted to accommodate an interior of the residential HVAC system. 12. The air filter of claim 11 , wherein the supportive frame includes multiple elongate sections that are slidably joined by corner sections and disposed along perimeter edges of the filter medium. 13. The air filter of claim 12 , wherein each of the multiplicity of elongate sections and corner sections includes an open side configured to receive a perimeter edge of the filter medium. 14. The air filter of claim 12 , wherein each corner section is configured to slidably retain two adjacent elongate sections. 15. A method for removing airborne molecular contaminants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from air within a residential space, the method comprising: providing a filter medium configured to remove contaminants from an air stream flowing through a residential heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC system), said filter medium having one or more filter media layers to form the filter medium; assembling an elongate section and at least a corner section onto each perimeter edge of the filter medium; joining the elongate sections by way of corner sections to form a supportive frame wherein the corner sections have at least a folded portion that forms an aperture wherein the supportive frame comprises a plurality of elongate sections and a plurality of corner sections disposed along perimeter edges of the filter medium configured for orienting the filter medium within the HVAC system; providing a plurality of corner sections having a plurality of folded portions; providing a middle portion absent the folds of the folded portion; and adjusting the supportive frame to cause the air stream to flow through the filter medium. 16. The method of claim 15 , wherein providing includes obtaining one or more media layers having a fiber density that increases in a direction of air flow through the filter medium. 17. The method of claim 15 , wherein assembling includes inserting the perimeter edge into a recess disposed along the length of the elongate section. 18. The method of claim 15 , wherein joining includes sliding the elongate member into the corner section, such that one or more folded portions comprising the corner section retain one or more edges of the elongate member. 19. The method of claim 15 , wherein adjusting includes sliding the corner sections with respect to the elongate sections to cause the supportive frame and the filter medium to assume a width and a height that accommodates an interior of the residential HVAC system. 20. The method of claim 15 , wherein orienting includes positioning the filter medium such that a fiber density comprising the filter medium increases in a direction of the air stream within the residential HVAC system.
