Cards made in accordance with the invention include a decorative layer attached to a core layer, where the decorative layer is designed to provide selected color(s) and/or selected texture(s) to a surface of the metal cards. At least one of the decorative layers is a layer derived from animal matter (e.g. leather). The cards may be dual interface smart cards configured to be read in a contactless manner and/or via contacts.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for making cards with a given appearance comprising the steps of: selecting a decorative layer, wherein said decorative layer is an embossed animal derived material veneer layer; and selecting a core for forming the body of said card, said core layer having first and second surfaces; said core layer comprising one of: (a) metal; (b) ceramic coated metal; (c) ceramic coated polymer, or (d) solid ceramic, and attaching said decorative layer to the first surface of the core layer. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of attaching said decorative and core layers includes laminating the layers. 3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising attaching a polymeric layer to the second surface of the core layer. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising disposing an integrated circuit module within said card, said integrated circuit module configured for at least one of: (a) wireless radio frequency (RF) transmission between the card and an external card reader; and (b) contact reading between the card and a contact reader. 5. The method of claim 1 , comprising selecting leather for said animal derived material veneer. 6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising processing said leather by treating a bottom surface of the leather layer so that it is adapted to accept an adhesive. 7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising the steps of: embossing a top surface of said leather layer and attaching the bottom surface of said leather to said first surface of said core layer to form a first assembly. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein said step of attaching said decorative layer to a core layer includes the step of forming a pocket within a surface of said core layer and attaching one of said decorative layers within said pocket. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the decorative layer has a thickness and the step of forming the pocket comprising forming the pocket to have a depth substantially equal to the thickness of the decorative layer. 10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising attaching a decorative layer to the second surface of the core layer. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein said decorative layer attached to the second surface of the core layer includes one of (a) an anodized metal layer, (b) a plant derived material veneer layer; (c) an animal derived material veneer layer; (d) an aggregate binder material veneer layer; (e) a ceramic layer; and (f) a layer of crystal fabric material. 12. The method of claim 1 , comprising selecting the core layer to have a thickness in a range of 0.005 inches to 0.032 inches. 13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising processing the decorative layer to have a thickness in a range of 0.003 inches to 0.014 inches. 14. A method for making cards with a given appearance comprising the steps of: selecting a decorative layer, wherein said decorative layer is an embossed animal derived material veneer layer, said animal derived material veneer being leather; selecting a core for forming the body of said card, said core layer having first and second surfaces and said core layer is a metal layer; processing said leather by treating a bottom surface of the leather layer so that it is adapted to accept an adhesive; embossing a top surface of said leather layer and attaching the bottom surface of said leather to said surface of said core layer to form a first assembly, wherein said embossed leather layer is a first leather layer; forming a second assembly comprising positioning a second leather layer, having top and bottom surfaces, with its top surface facing the top surface of the first, embossed, leather layer of said first assembly; and laminating the first and second leather layers and the metal layer, whereby the embossed pattern of the first leather layer is transferred to the second leather layer and the components of the first assembly are laminated. 15. A card comprising: a core layer, said core layer forming a bulk of the card and having a predetermined color, said core layer having first and second surfaces and comprising one of: (a) metal; (b) ceramic coated metal; (c) ceramic coated polymer, or (d) solid ceramic; and a decorative layer attached to said first surface of said core layer for providing at least one of color and texture to the card, said decorative layer comprising an embossed animal derived material veneer layer. 16. The card of claim 15 , wherein said animal derived material veneer layer comprises leather. 17. The card of claim 16 , wherein the leather has an embossed top surface and has a bottom surface adhesively attached to said first surface of said core layer. 18. The card of claim 16 , wherein the leather is positioned on a top surface of the card. 19. The card of claim 15 , comprising a pocket disposed in the first surface of said core layer, wherein the decorative layer is attached to the core layer within the pocket. 20. The card of claim 15 , wherein the decorative layer attached to the first surface of said core layer is a first decorative layer, the card further comprising a second decorative layer attached to the second surface of said core layer. 21. The card of claim 20 , wherein said second decorative layer comprises one of: (a) an anodized metal layer, (b) a plant derived material veneer layer; (c) an animal derived material veneer layer; (d) an aggregate binder material veneer layer; (e) a ceramic layer; and (f) a layer of crystal fabric material. 22. The card of claim 21 , wherein the first decorative layer is different from the second decorative layer. 23. The card of claim 15 , wherein the card further comprises a signature panel and a magnetic stripe. 24. The card of claim 15 , wherein the card further comprises an integrated circuit module configured for at least one of: (a) wireless radio frequency (RF) transmission between the card and an external card reader; and (b) contact reading between the card and a contact reader. 25. The card of claim 15 , wherein the core layer has a thickness in a range of 0.005 inches to 0.032 inches and the decorative layer has a thickness in the range of 0.003 inches to 0.014 inches.
