An antimicrobial ceramic glazing composition contains one or more antimicrobial agents disposed therein. Methods for making and using the glazing composition are disclosed, as well as substrates having a fired antimicrobial glaze thereon. The antimicrobial agents comprise metallic oxides, with a subset of the disclosed combinations exhibiting synergistic effect in fired glazes.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for manufacturing an antimicrobial ceramic glazing composition, comprising: adding, to the ceramic glaze base, a synergistic antimicrobial composition that is one of: 2% Ag 2 CO 3 +2% Bi 2 O 3 , 2% Ag 2 CO 3 +2% CuO, 2% Ag 2 CO 3 +2% SnO 2 , 2% Ag 2 CO 3 +2% ZnO, 2% Ag 2 CO 3 +4% ZnO, 2% Bi 2 O 3 +2% CuO, 2% Bi 2 O 3 +4% CuO, 2% CuO+4% Ag 2 CO 3 , 2% CuO+4% SnO 2 , 2% CuO+2% TiO 2 , 2% CuO+4% TiO 2 2% CuO+4% ZnO, 2% SnO 2 +4% Ag 2 CO 3 , 2% SnO 2 +4% CuO, 2% TiO 2 +4% Ag 2 CO 3 , 2% TiO 2 +4% CuO, 2% ZnO+4% Ag 2 CO 3 , or 2% ZnO+4% CuO; milling the ceramic glaze base and added antimicrobial composition; hydrating the milled ceramic glaze base; and optionally, remixing the hydrated glaze base.
