Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An antimicrobial ceramic glazing composition contains one or more antimicrobial agents disposed therein. Methods for making and using the glazing composition are disclosed, as well as substrates having a fired antimicrobial glaze thereon. The antimicrobial agents comprise metallic oxides, with a subset of the disclosed combinations exhibiting synergistic effect in fired glazes.

What is claimed is: 1. An antimicrobial ceramic glazing composition, comprising: a ceramic glaze base adapted to be fired at a firing temperature of from at least about 1062° C.; and a synergistic antimicrobial composition including a first antimicrobial agent and a second antimicrobial agent, the antimicrobial composition being one of: 2% Ag 2 CO 3 +2% Bi 2 O 3 , 2% Ag 2 CO 3 +2% CuO, 2% Ag 2 CO 3 +2% SnO 2 , 2% Ag 2 CO 3 +2% ZnO, 2% Ag 2 CO 3 +4% ZnO, 2% Bi 2 O 3 +2% CuO, 2% Bi 2 O 3 +4% CuO, 2% CuO+4% Ag 2 CO 3 , 2% CuO+4% SnO 2 , 2% CuO+2% TiO 2 , 2% CuO+4% TiO 2 , 2% CuO+4% ZnO, 2% SnO 2 +4% Ag 2 CO 3 , 2% SnO 2 +4% CuO, 2% TiO 2 +4% Ag 2 CO 3 , 2% TiO 2 +4% CuO, 2% ZnO+4% Ag 2 CO 3 , or 2% ZnO+4% CuO; wherein percentages are based on weight, and wherein the glazing composition is adapted to possess an antimicrobial property after a conventional firing process at the firing temperature. 2. The antimicrobial ceramic glazing composition of claim 1 wherein the synergistic antimicrobial combination is 2% Ag 2 CO 3 +2% ZnO. 3. A glazed ceramic substrate, comprising: a ceramic substrate having a first substrate surface; and a fired synergistic antimicrobial composition disposed on the first substrate surface; wherein the synergistic antimicrobial composition is a post-fired state of a ceramic glazing composition including one of: 2% Ag 2 CO 3 +2% Bi 2 O 3 , 2% Ag 2 CO 3 +2% CuO, 2% Ag 2 CO 3 +2% SnO 2 , 2% Ag 2 CO 3 +2% ZnO, 2% Ag 2 CO 3 +4% ZnO, 2% Bi 2 O 3 +2% CuO, 2% Bi 2 O 3 +4% CuO, 2% CuO+4% Ag 2 CO 3 , 2% CuO+4% SnO 2 , 2% CuO+2% TiO 2 , 2% CuO+4% TiO 2 , 2% CuO+4% ZnO, 2% SnO 2 +4% Ag 2 CO 3 , 2% SnO 2 +4% CuO, 2% TiO 2 +4% Ag 2 CO 3 , 2% TiO 2 +4% CuO, 2% ZnO+4% Ag 2 CO 3 , or 2% ZnO+4% CuO, wherein percentages are based on weight.
