The present invention relates to extracted plant lipid or microbial lipid comprising docosapentaenoic acid, and processes for producing the extracted lipid.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. Brassica sp. seedoil, comprising fatty acids in an esterified form, the fatty acids comprising oleic acid, palmitic acid, ω6 polyunsaturated fatty acids which comprise linoleic acid (LA), ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids which comprise α-linolenic acid (ALA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and optionally one or more of stearidonic acid (SDA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and eicosatetraenoic acid (ETA), wherein the level of palmitic acid in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is between 2% and 16%, wherein the level of myristic acid (C14:0) in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil, if present, is less than 1%, wherein the level of DPA in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is between 1% and 16%, wherein the level of DHA in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is less than 2%, and wherein at least 70% of the DPA esterified in the form of triacylglycerols (TAG) in the seedoil is in the sn-1 or sn-3 position of the TAG. 2. The seedoil of claim 1 which has one or more of the following features: i) the level of palmitic acid in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is between 2% and 15%, ii) the level of myristic acid (C14:0) in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is about 0.1%, iii) the level of oleic acid in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is between 1% and 30%, iv) the level of linoleic acid (LA) in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is between 4% and 35%, v) the level of α-linolenic acid (ALA) in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is between 4% and 40%, vi) a level of γ-linolenic acid (GLA) of less than 4% is present in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil, vii) the level of stearidonic acid (SDA) in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is less than 4%, viii) the level of eicosatetraenoic acid (ETA) in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is less than 4%, ix) a level of eicosatrienoic acid (ETrA) of less than 4% is present in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil, x) the level of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is between 4% and 15%, xi) the seedoil comprises ω6-docosapentaenoic acid (22:5 Δ4,7,10,13,16 ) in its fatty acid content, xii) the seedoil comprises less than 0.1% of ω6-docosapentaenoic acid (22:5 Δ4,7,10,13,16 ) in its fatty acid content, xiii) a level of total saturated fatty acids of between 4% and 25% is present in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil, xiv) a level of total monounsaturated fatty acids of between 4% and 40% is present in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil, xv) the level of ω6 polyunsaturated fatty acids and ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids is, in total, between 20% and 75% of the total fatty acid content of the seedoil, xvi) a level of total ω6 polyunsaturated fatty acids of between 20% and 35% is present in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil, xvii) a level of new ω6 fatty acids of less than 1% is present in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil, xviii) a level of new ω3 fatty acids of between 21% and 45% is present in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil, xix) the ratio of total ω6 polyunsaturated fatty acids: total ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the fatty acid content of the seedoil is between 1.0 and 3.0, xx) the ratio of new ω6 polyunsaturated fatty acids: new ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the fatty acid content of the seedoil is between 0.1 and 1, xxi) the total fatty acid content in the seedoil has less than 1.5% C20:1, xxii) the seedoil comprises a triacylglycerol (TAG) content of 95% by weight, xxiii) the seedoil comprises diacylglycerol (DAG), which DAG comprises DPA, xxiv) the seedoil comprises less than 1% free (non-esterified) fatty acids, and xxv) the seedoil comprises tri-DPA TAG (TAG 66:15). 3. The seedoil of claim 1 , wherein the level of oleic acid in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is between 1% and 30%. 4. The seedoil of claim 1 , wherein the level of γ-linolenic acid (GLA) in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is less than 4%. 5. The seedoil of claim 1 , wherein the level of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is between 0.05% and 10%. 6. The seedoil of claim 1 , wherein the level of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is less than 0.5%. 7. The seedoil of claim 1 , wherein the level of total saturated fatty acids in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is between 6% and 12%. 8. The seedoil of claim 1 , wherein the level of new ω6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is between 0.5% and 4%. 9. The seedoil of claim 1 , wherein at least 80% of the DPA esterified in the form of TAG in the seedoil is in the sn-1 or sn-3 position of the TAG. 10. The seedoil of claim 1 , wherein the total fatty acid content in the seedoil has less than 1.5% C20:1. 11. The seedoil of claim 1 , which has the following features i) the level of oleic acid in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is between 1% and 30%, ii) the level of linoleic acid (LA) in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is between 4% and 35%, iii) the level of α-linolenic acid (ALA) in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is between 4% and 40%, iv) a level of γ-linolenic acid (GLA) of less than 4% is present in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil, and v) a level of total saturated fatty acids of between 4% and 25% is present in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil. 12. The seedoil of claim 11 , wherein the level of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the total fatty acid content of the seedoil is between 0.5% and 2.0%. 13. The seedoil of claim 1 , wherein the seedoil is from Brassica napus. 14. The seedoil of claim 11 , wherein the seedoil is from Brassica napus. 15. The seedoil of claim 12 , wherein the seedoil is from Brassica napus. 16. A composition comprising the seedoil of claim 1 , wherein the seedoil has not been blended with another lipid.
