Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Systems and methods for enabling a WLAN client to communicate simultaneously over more than one band at a time are described, where each client has at least one radio that is operational in each supported band. Load balancing based on traffic requirements optimizes the use of the multiple bands.

What is claimed is: 1. A simultaneous client wireless device comprising: a first wireless module configured to perform communication functions of MAC (media access control) and PHY (physical) layers for a first wireless radio operable in a first wireless band; a second wireless module configured to perform communication functions of MAC and PHY layers for a second wireless radio operable in a second wireless band; and a communication module configured as an intermediate layer between the MAC layer of the first wireless module and a network layer, and between the MAC layer of the second wireless module and the network layer, the communication module configured to: use an application programming interface to retrieve information from the MAC layer and write information to the MAC layer of the first wireless module, and to retrieve information from the MAC layer and write information to the MAC layer of the second wireless module, and manage simultaneous connections over the first wireless band and the second wireless band by ordering or aggregating packets received from the first wireless module and the second wireless module to communicate the ordered or aggregated packets to the network layer, and load balancing packets received from the network layer by selecting at the intermediate layer either the first wireless band or the second wireless band to communicate the packets received from the network layer, wherein the communications over the first wireless band and the second wireless band use a local area network protocol. 2. The simultaneous client wireless device of claim 1 , wherein the first wireless module is a chipset, and the second wireless module is a chipset. 3. The simultaneous client wireless device of claim 1 , wherein the communication module is further configured to order the packets received over the first wireless band and the second wireless band and communicate the ordered packets to the network layer. 4. The simultaneous client wireless device of claim 1 , wherein the communication module is configured to perform layer two aggregation of the packets received over the first wireless band and the second wireless band and communicate the aggregated packets to the network layer. 5. The simultaneous client wireless device of claim 1 , wherein the communication module is further configured to perform the MAC layer functions including ordering packets and load balancing packets. 6. The simultaneous client wireless device of claim 1 , further comprising: a third wireless module configured to perform communication functions of MAC and PHY layers for a third wireless radio operable in a third wireless band, wherein the communication module is configured as an intermediate layer between the MAC layer of the third wireless module and the network layer to: use the application programming interface to retrieve information from the MAC layer and write information to the MAC layer of the third wireless module, and manage simultaneous communications over the third wireless band in addition to the first wireless band and the second wireless band. 7. A wireless device comprising: a communication module configured as an intermediate layer between a MAC (media access control) layer of a first wireless module and a network layer, and between a MAC layer of a second wireless module and the network layer, the communication module configured to: use an application programming interface to retrieve information from the MAC layer and write information to the MAC layer of the first wireless module and to retrieve information from the MAC layer and write information to the MAC layer of the second wireless module, and manage simultaneous connections over a first wireless band of the first wireless module and a second wireless band of the second wireless module by ordering or aggregating packets received from the first wireless module and the second wireless module to communicate the ordered or aggregated packets to the network layer, and load balancing packets received from the network layer by selecting at the intermediate layer either the first wireless band or the second wireless band to communicate the packets received from the network layer, wherein the communications over the first wireless band and the second wireless band use a local area network protocol. 8. The wireless device of claim 7 , wherein the first wireless module is configured to perform communication functions of MAC and PHY layers for a first wireless radio operable in the first wireless band, and the second wireless module is configured to perform communication functions of MAC and PHY layers for a second wireless radio operable in the second wireless band. 9.
