The present invention relates to chimeric protein vaccines and methods of use thereof in the treatment of Staphylococcus aureus . One embodiment of the present invention provides a method of generating an immune response in a mammal, that includes administering to the mammal, a composition having a chimeric protein having at least one of: a portion of a cholera toxin, a portion of a heat-labile toxin, and a portion of a shiga toxin; and an antigen having at least one of: an antigenic material from S. aureus and an antigenic material from a S. aureus -specific polypeptide.

The invention claimed is: 1. A chimeric protein comprising an amino acid sequence that is at least 90% identical to SEQ ID NO: 2 or an amino acid sequence that is at least 90% identical to SEQ ID NO: 3 and a truncated iron-regulated surface determinant A (IsdA) protein of S. aureus of SEQ ID NO: 4 as present within the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 5 or SEQ ID NO: 6. 2. The chimeric protein of claim 1 and an adjuvant protein selected from the group consisting of cholera toxin, heat-labile toxin and shiga toxin. 3. The chimeric protein of claim 2 , wherein said adjuvant protein is selected from the group consisting of cholera toxin subunit A (CTA), cholera toxin subunit B (CTB), heat-labile toxin subunit B and shiga toxin subunit B. 4. The chimeric protein of claim 3 , wherein said CTA adjuvant is CTA 2 or said CTB adjuvant is CTB. 5. The chimeric protein of claim 4 , wherein said CTA 2 has the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 2. 6. The chimeric protein of claim 4 , wherein said CTB has the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 3. 7. The chimeric protein of claim 5 , wherein the chimeric protein has the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 6. 8. The chimeric protein of claim 6 , wherein the chimeric protein has the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 5. 9. The chimeric protein of claim 2 , wherein the chimeric protein is a fusion protein. 10. An immunogenic composition comprising the chimeric protein of claim 1 . 11. An immunogenic composition comprising the chimeric protein of claim 7 . 12. An immunogenic composition comprising the chimeric protein of claim 8 .
