The present invention relates to a chemically resistant glass composition for the production of reinforcing strands which comprises the following constituents within the limits defined below, expressed in mol %: SiO 2 67-72%; ZrO 2 5-9.5%, preferably ≥7.5%; R 2 O (R═Na, K and Li) 11-17%; Li 2 O 0-5.5%; K 2 O 0-5.5%; Na 2 O<10%; and CaO 3-9%, the composition furthermore containing less 1% of impurities (Al 2 O 3 , Fe 2 O 3 , Cr 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , MgO, SrO, BaO and P 2 O 5 ) and being free of F. It also relates to the glass strands obtained from this composition and to the composites based on an organic or inorganic material containing such strands.

The invention claimed is: 1. A glass fiber reinforced composite material, comprising: a matrix material; and reinforcing glass fibers, wherein said reinforcing glass fibers are formed from a glass composition comprising: 67-72 mol % SiO 2 ; 5-9.5 mol % ZrO 2 ; 11-15.7 mol % R 2 O where R 2 O is the sum of Na 2 O, K 2 O and Li 2 O; 0-5.5 mol % Li 2 O; 2.5-5.5 mol % K 2 O; less than 10 mol % Na 2 O; 3-9 mol % CaO; less than 0.5% of impurities selected from the group consisting of Al 2 O 3 , Fe 2 O 3 , Cr 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , MgO, SrO, BaO and P 2 O 5 ; and wherein said reinforcing fibers are free of F. 2. The glass fiber reinforced composite material of claim 1 , wherein the amounts of Na 2 O, K 2 O and CaO satisfy the following relationship: 2.5 mol %≤Na 2 O+K 2 O—CaO≤19.5 mol %. 3. The glass fiber reinforced composite material of claim 1 , wherein the difference between the forming temperature (T logn =3) and the liquidus temperature (T liq ) of the fibers is at least +10° C. 4. The glass fiber reinforced composite material of claim 1 , wherein the matrix material is a cementitious material selected from the group consisting of cement, concrete, mortar, gypsum, slag and compounds formed by the reaction between lime, silica and water. 5. The glass fiber reinforced composite material of claim 1 , wherein the matrix material is a thermoplastic selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, polyesters, polyamides, polyurethanes and blends thereof. 6. The glass fiber reinforced composite material of claim 1 , wherein the matrix material is a thermoset, selected from the group consisting of polyesters, phenolic resins, epoxy resins, polyacrylics and blends thereof. 7. The glass fiber reinforced composite material of claim 1 , wherein the fiber comprises: 2.5-5.5 mol % K 2 O; and 5 to less than 10 mol % Na 2 O. 8. The glass fiber reinforced composite material of claim 7 , wherein the fiber comprises: 1.5-5.5 mol % Li 2 O. 9.
