The present invention relates generally to methods for the treatment and/or prophylaxis of neurological diseases and disorders involving administration of trans 10-HDA. In particular, the methods of the present invention are useful in the treatment and/or prophylaxis of acquired or progressive neurodevelopmental disorders and conditions in mammals. More particularly, methods are taught herein for the treatment and/or prophylaxis of diseases and disorders such as autism spectrum disorders.
First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. A method for the treatment of autism spectrum disorder comprising administering to a mammal in need thereof an effective amount of trans 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the autism spectrum disorder is selected from the group consisting of Autistic Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder and Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified, and Rett syndrome. 3. The method according to claim 1 wherein the trans 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is administered as a pharmaceutical composition. 4. The method according to claim 2 wherein the trans 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is administered as a pharmaceutical composition. 5. The method according to claim 1 wherein the mammal is a human.
