Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Dental cement compositions (including two-part compositions), kits, and related methods are used for bonding a dental prosthetic appliance to a tooth. A first part includes an amine activator component and a zinc oxide reactive filler, while a second part includes a polymerization initiator (e.g., benzoyl peroxide) and a polymerizable component having a structure including at least one acrylate or methacrylate group at one end and a carboxylic acid group at another end. A temporary cement composition advantageously exhibits reduced compressive and/or bonding strength relative to permanent cement compositions, which provides sufficient strength to facilitate normal use of the teeth while the provisional appliance is in use, while also facilitating easy removal of the provisional appliance for replacement with a permanent appliance at a later time.

What is claimed is: 1. A two-part dental cement composition, comprising: a first part including an amine activator and zinc oxide; and a second part including a polymerization initiator and a polymerizable component including an acrylate or methacrylate group and a carboxylic acid group and that is void of zinc oxide to prevent interaction of the carboxylic acid group of the polymerizable component and the zinc oxide until the first part and the second part are mixed together, at least one of the first or second parts further comprising a plasticizer comprising at least one of glycerin, hydrogenated methyl ester of rosin, aliphatic hydrocarbon, polybutadiene, cetyl alcohol, or polysorbate, and at least one of the first or second parts further comprising water. 2. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 1 , wherein polymerization of the polymerizable component is initiated upon mixing of the first and second parts. 3. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 1 , wherein the zinc oxide reacts with the carboxylic acid group of the polymerizable component upon mixing of the first and second parts. 4. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 1 , wherein the zinc oxide comprises between about 3% and about 50% by weight of the composition when mixed. 5. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 1 , wherein the zinc oxide comprises between about 10% and about 20% by weight of the composition when mixed. 6. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 1 , further comprising an un-reactive filler separate from the zinc oxide. 7. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 6 , wherein the un-reactive filler comprises between about 3% and about 30% by weight of the composition when mixed. 8. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 1 , wherein the plasticizer comprises a straight chain aliphatic hydrocarbon or a polycyclic aliphatic hydrocarbon. 9. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 1 , the polymerizable component having a structure including the acrylate or methacrylate group at one end and the carboxylic acid group at another end. 10. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 9 , wherein the polymerizable component comprises at least one of mono-2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl succinate or 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate/phthalic anhydride. 11. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 1 , further comprising a cross-linking polymerizable component. 12. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 11 , wherein the cross-linking polymerizable component comprises at least one of a diacrylate or a dimethacrylate. 13. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 11 , wherein the cross-linking polymerizable component is phosphated. 14. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 1 , further comprising hydroxypropylmethacrylate. 15. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 1 , wherein the water is included exclusively within the second part. 16. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 1 , wherein the plasticizer comprises at least about 35% by weight of the composition when mixed. 17. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 1 , wherein the plasticizer comprises between about 15% and about 70% by weight of the composition when mixed. 18. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 1 , wherein the plasticizer comprises between about 25% and about 60% by weight of the composition when mixed. 19. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 1 , wherein the plasticizer comprises between about 30% and about 40% by weight of the composition when mixed. 20. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 1 , wherein the dental cement composition, when cured, has a compressive strength not greater than about 70 MPa. 21. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 1 , wherein the dental cement composition, when cured, has a compressive strength not greater than about 60 MPa. 22. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 11 , wherein the dental cement composition, when cured, has a compressive strength not greater than about 30 MPa. 23. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 11 , wherein the dental cement composition, when cured, has a bonding strength less than 3 MPa. 24. A kit for temporarily bonding a provisional dental prosthetic appliance to a tooth comprising: the two-part dental cement composition of claim 1 ; a syringe comprising two barrels; and a mixing and dispensing tip. 25. A method for temporarily bonding a provisional dental prosthetic appliance to a tooth comprising: providing the kit of claim 24 ; preparing a tooth surface for temporarily bonding the provisional dental prosthetic appliance thereto; mixing together the first and second parts of the dental cement composition; applying the mixed dental cement composition to a surface of at least one of the prepared tooth surface or the provisional dental prosthetic appliance; and temporarily bonding the provisional dental prosthetic appliance to the prepared tooth surface. 26. The method of claim 25 , further comprising removing the provisional dental prosthetic appliance and replacing the provisional dental prosthetic appliance with a permanent restoration. 27. A two-part dental cement composition, comprising: a first part including an amine activator and zinc oxide; and a second part including a peroxide initiator and a polymerizable component having an acrylate or methacrylate group and a carboxylic acid group; at least one of the first or second parts further comprising a polybutadiene plasticizer. 28. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 27 , the polymerizable component having a structure including the acrylate or methacrylate group at one end and the carboxylic acid group at another end. 29. The two-part dental cement composition of claim 27 , wherein the polymerizable component comprises at least one of mono-2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl succinate or 2-hydroxyethylmethacryl ate/phthalic anhydride. 30. A two-part dental cement composition, comprising: a first part including an amine activator and zinc oxide; and a second part including a polymerization initiator and a polymerizable component including an acrylate or methacrylate group and a carboxylic acid group, at least one of the first or second parts further comprising a plasticizer comprising at least one of glycerin, hydrogenated methyl ester of rosin, aliphatic hydrocarbon, polybutadiene, cetyl alcohol, or polysorbate, at least the second part comprising water.
