Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system that incorporates the subject disclosure may include, for example, a method for measuring a power level in at least a portion of a plurality of resource blocks occurring in a radio frequency spectrum, wherein the measuring occurs for a plurality of time cycles to generate a plurality of power level measurements, calculating a baseline power level according to at least a portion of the plurality of power levels, determining a threshold from the baseline power level, and monitoring at least a portion of the plurality of resource blocks for signal interference according to the threshold. Other embodiments are disclosed.

What is claimed is: 1. A method, comprising: measuring, by a system comprising a processor, a power level in each of a plurality of resource blocks occurring in a radio frequency spectrum of a wireless communication system, wherein the plurality of resource blocks are used for uplink communications or downlink communications, and wherein the measuring occurs for a plurality of time cycles to generate a plurality of power level measurements for each resource block; calculating, by the system, a baseline power level for each resource block of the plurality of resource blocks according to at least one of the plurality of power level measurements for each resource block to generate a plurality of baseline power levels for the plurality of resource blocks; calculating, by the system, an aggregate baseline power level according to at least a portion of the plurality of baseline power levels; determining, by the system, a threshold from the aggregate baseline power level; monitoring, by the system, the plurality of resource blocks for signal interference according to the threshold; detecting, by the system, the signal interference in at least one resource block of the plurality of resource blocks according to the threshold; and determining, by the system, whether to mitigate the signal interference based on a correlation analysis of the signal interference in the at least one resource block, wherein priority for mitigation is given based on a time of day of occurrence of the signal interference. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: repeating one of the measuring the power level in each of the plurality of resource blocks, the calculating the baseline power level for each resource block, the calculating the aggregate baseline power level, or any combination thereof to determine an updated threshold; and repeating the monitoring and detecting steps according to the updated threshold. 3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising mitigating the signal interference in the at least one resource block, responsive to the determination to mitigate the signal interference. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the mitigating comprises filtering the signal interference. 5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the mitigating comprises submitting a notification message, wherein the notification message comprises spectral information associated with the signal interference. 6. The method of claim 3 , wherein the mitigating comprises avoiding the signal interference. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining an identification of a source of the signal interference in the at least one resource block. 8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising instructing the source of the signal interference to perform an action that reduces or eliminates the signal interference. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wireless communication system operates according to a long term evolution (LTE) protocol. 10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting, by the system, signals, including the resource blocks, to perform the downlink communications and the uplink communications, wherein the signals transmitted in the downlink communications are orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) signals, and wherein the signals transmitted in the uplink communications are single carrier frequency-division multiple access (SC-FDMA) signals. 11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising discarding one of a first portion of the plurality of power measurements prior to calculating the baseline power level for each resource block, a second portion of the plurality of baseline power levels prior to calculating the aggregate baseline power level, or any combination thereof. 12. The method of claim 1 , comprising ignoring a first resource block of the plurality of resource blocks which is determined to have no data traffic. 13. A memory device of a base station, comprising instructions, which when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising: measuring power levels associated with a plurality of segments occurring in a radio frequency spectrum of a wireless communication system, wherein the measuring occurs for at least a plurality of time cycles to generate a plurality of power level measurements; calculating normalized power levels for the plurality of segments according to at least one of the plurality of power level measurements; calculating an aggregate normalized power level according to at least a portion of the normalized power levels; determining a threshold from the aggregate normalized power level; monitoring the plurality of segments for signal interference according to the threshold; detecting signal interference in at least one segment of the plurality of segments according to the threshold; and determining whether to mitigate the signal interference based on a correlation analysis of the signal interference in the at least one segment of the plurality of segments, wherein priority for mitigation is determined based on time of day of an occurrence of the signal interference. 14. The memory device of claim 13 , wherein the operations further comprise suppressing at least in part the signal interference in the at least one segment of the plurality of segments responsive to the detecting. 15. The memory device of claim 13 , wherein each segment of the plurality of segments comprises a resource block conforming to a long term evolution (LTE) protocol. 16. The memory device of claim 13 , wherein the operations further comprise transmitting signals, including the plurality of segments, for downlink communications, wherein the downlink communications are orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) signals. 17. The memory device of claim 13 , wherein the operations further comprise transmitting signals, including the plurality of segments, for uplink communications, wherein the uplink communications are single carrier frequency-division multiple access (SC-FDMA) signals. 18. A machine-readable storage medium, comprising executable instructions that, when executed by a processing system including a processor, facilitate performance of operations, comprising: measuring power levels associated with a plurality of segments occurring in a radio frequency spectrum of a wireless communication system, wherein the measuring occurs for at least a plurality of time cycles to generate a plurality of power level measurements; calculating normalized power levels for the plurality of segments according to at least one of the plurality of power level measurements; calculating an aggregate normalized power level according to at least a portion of the normalized power levels; determining a threshold from the aggregate normalized power level; monitoring the plurality of segments for signal interference according to the threshold; detecting signal interference in at least one segment of the plurality of segments according to the threshold; and determining whether to mitigate the signal interference based on a correlation analysis of the signal interference in the at least one segment of the plurality of segments, wherein priority for mitigation is determined based on time of day of an occurrence of the signal interference. 19. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 18 , wherein the operations further comprise suppressing at least in part the signal interference in the at least one segment of the plurality of segments responsive to the detecting. 20.
