The invention claimed is: 1. A constant mesh gearbox having a plurality of individually selectable speed ratios, and comprising: a casing defining five parallel rotational axes, said axes being respectively an input axis, an output axis, a first intermediate axis, a second intermediate axis, and a third intermediate axis; gear pairs for driving between members rotatable on the input axis, the output axis and the intermediate axes; six sequential speed ratios in a first rotatable direction of an output member on said output axis, wherein said speed ratios each comprise two gear pairs between an input member on said input axis and said output member, a seventh sequential speed ratio comprising four gear wheel pairs between the input member and output member, and an eighth sequential speed ratio comprising four gear wheel pairs between the input member and the output member. 2. A gearbox according to claim 1 , wherein four of said speed ratios associate the input member, the output member and a first intermediate member on the first intermediate axis. 3. A gearbox according to claim 1 , wherein two of said speed ratios associate the input member, the output member and a second intermediate member on the second intermediate axis. 4. A gearbox according to claim 3 , wherein said seventh speed ratio associates the input member, the output member, and members rotatable on the first and the third intermediate axis. 5. A gearbox according to claim 4 , wherein the member rotatable on the first intermediate axis comprises an idler gear wheel rotatable on a shaft. 6. A gearbox according to claim 5 , wherein said idler gear comprises two adjacent gear wheels of different diameter. 7. A gearbox according to claim 4 , wherein the member rotatable on the third intermediate axis comprises a sleeve rotatable on a shaft. 8. A gearbox according to claim 1 , wherein the eighth speed ratio associates the input member, the output member, and members rotatable on the first and the third intermediate axis. 9. A gearbox according to claim 8 , wherein the member rotatable on the first intermediate axis comprises an idler gear wheel rotatable on a shaft. 10. A gearbox according to claim 9 , wherein said idler gear wheel comprises two adjacent gear wheels of different diameter. 11. A gearbox according to claim 8 , wherein the member rotatable on the third intermediate axis comprises a sleeve rotatable on a shaft. 12. A gearbox according to claim 1 , wherein said seventh and eighth speed ratios are numerically adjacent. 13. A gearbox according to claim 12 , wherein said seventh and eighth speed ratios are numerically lower than said first speed ratio. 14. A gearbox according to claim 1 , wherein a first layshaft is provided on the first intermediate axis, and second layshaft shaft is provided on the second intermediate axis, each layshaft driving said output via respective layshaft output gear wheel. 15. A gearbox according to claim 1 , wherein a first layshaft is provided on the first intermediate axis, a third layshaft is provided on the third intermediate axis, a sleeve is provided on said third layshaft, and said sleeve and first layshaft are coupled by a gear wheel pair. 16. A gearbox according to claim 15 , and including two gear wheels rotatable on said sleeve and coupled respectively to idler gear wheels rotatable on said first layshaft, said gear wheels being selectively engageable for rotation with said sleeve. 17. A gearbox according to claim 1 , wherein a higher speed ratio is in the range 60-75% of its numerically adjacent lower speed neighbor. 18. A gearbox according to claim 1 , and having a reverse ratio which provides for a second rotatable direction of the output member on the output axis, said reverse ratio including torque transmission via rotatable elements on two of said intermediate axes, and wherein said reverse ratio is via an idler rotatable on one of said intermediate axes, said idler comprising two adjacent gear wheels of different diameter and meshing with respective gear wheels rotatable on the input axis and another intermediate axis. 19. A gearbox according to claim 18 , wherein said idler is also associated with a forward speed ratio. 20. A gearbox according to claim 4 , including a shaft rotatable on one of said intermediate axes, and a muff rotatable on said shaft, said muff being connected by a gear wheel pair to another shaft on another of said intermediate axes. 21. A vehicle powertrain incorporating a gearbox according to claim 1 . 22. A vehicle comprising a gearbox according to claim 1 .
