High-altitude balloons and apparatuses for filling such high-altitude balloons are provided. As an example, an apparatus for filling a high-altitude balloon includes a tube extending through envelope material of the balloon is provided. The apparatus also includes a flange connected to a first end of the tube. The flange is connected to an interior surface of the balloon. A fitting is connected to a second end of the tube. The fitting is configured for attachment with an apparatus for filling the balloon with lift gas. In addition, methods of filling high-altitude balloons with lift gas and methods of manufacturing balloons are also provided.

The invention claimed is: 1. A system comprising: a filling apparatus for filling a balloon, the apparatus comprising: a hollow tube configured for arrangement externally to a balloon envelope of the balloon; and a plug member connected to an end of the tube, the plug member having a flange portion being configured for arrangement externally to the balloon envelope, and the plug member further having a set of grooves arranged around the plug member. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tube is configured to be cold welded to seal lift gas in the balloon. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the plug member includes a sealing O-ring in each groove of the set of grooves. 4. The system of claim 3 , wherein high vacuum grease is applied to each sealing O-ring in each groove of the set of grooves. 5. The system of claim 3 , wherein each of the sealing O-rings in each groove of the set of grooves includes flourosilicone in order to reduce shrinkage of the each of the sealing O-rings at a predetermined altitude. 6. The system of claim 3 , wherein each groove of the set of grooves extends around a complete circumference of the plug member. 7. The system of claim 3 , wherein each groove is positioned in order to allow each sealing O-ring in each groove of the set of grooves to create a seal between the plug member and a fill port body. 8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the filling apparatus further includes the fill port body. 9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the fill port body includes a second flange portion and a threaded body portion configured for mating with a fill port body retaining nut. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein each groove of the set of grooves is positioned such that each seal between the plug member and fill port body is at an internal surface of the fill port body, and where the threaded body portion is at an external surface of the fill port body. 11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second flange portion includes a second set of grooves. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the second flange portion is configured for attachment with an internal surface of the balloon envelope. 13. The system of claim 11 , wherein one groove of the second set of grooves includes a sealing O-ring arranged in the one groove. 14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the second set of grooves is separated by a flexible member. 15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the flexible member is configured to keep the sealing O-ring arranged in the one groove in place at temperatures below an elastic temperature of the sealing O-ring arranged in the one groove in order to maintain a seal formed by the sealing O-ring arranged in the one groove. 16. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second flange portion is configured for arrangement internally to the balloon envelope. 17. The system of claim 9 , wherein the threaded body portion is configured for arrangement at least partially externally to the balloon envelope. 18. The system of claim 8 , wherein materials of each sealing O-ring in each groove of the set of grooves, the plug member, and the fill port body are selected such that a change in a cross sectional area of the grooves of the set of grooves at a given temperature is greater than or equal to a change in a diameter of the each sealing O-ring in the each groove of the set of grooves at the given temperature. 19. The system of claim 1 , further comprising the balloon. 20. The system of claim 1 , wherein the filling apparatus is configured for attachment to the balloon envelope prior to the completion of a structure of the balloon envelope.
