Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A vision display system for a vehicle includes a rear backup camera disposed at a rear portion of the vehicle and having a field of view rearward of the vehicle. A display device includes a video display screen disposed in the interior cabin of the vehicle and viewable by a driver of the vehicle. When the vehicle is at a traffic stop and the engine is turned off under “stop and go” operation, the video display screen displays video images derived from image data captured by the rear backup camera within two seconds of shifting of a vehicle transmission of the vehicle into reverse gear. After the engine of the vehicle restarts under “stop and go” operation, the video display screen displays video images derived from image data captured by the rear backup camera within two seconds of shifting of the vehicle transmission of the vehicle into reverse gear.

The invention claimed is: 1. A vision display system for a vehicle, said vision display system comprising: a rear backup camera disposed at a rear portion of a vehicle equipped with said vision display system; said rear backup camera having a field of view exterior and rearward of the equipped vehicle; wherein the equipped vehicle is operable as a “stop and go” vehicle with the engine of the equipped vehicle turning off at a traffic stop and then restarting again when the equipped vehicle is to commence moving again; a display device comprising a video display screen disposed in the interior cabin of the equipped vehicle and viewable by a driver of the equipped vehicle, said video display screen having a diagonal dimension of at least 5 inches; wherein, when the equipped vehicle is at a traffic stop and the engine is turned off under “stop and go” operation, said video display screen displays video images derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera within two seconds of shifting of a vehicle transmission of the equipped vehicle into reverse gear; and wherein, after the engine of the equipped vehicle restarts under “stop and go” operation, said video display screen displays video images derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera within two seconds of shifting of the vehicle transmission of the equipped vehicle into reverse gear. 2. The vision display system of claim 1 , wherein said vision display system detects a first ignition condition when the engine of the equipped vehicle is first started after initial ignition on, and wherein said vision display system operates different in the first ignition condition than during “stop and go” operation of the equipped vehicle. 3. The vision display system of claim 1 , wherein said vision display system processes video signals emanating from said rear backup camera to determine an earliest valid video signal. 4. The vision display system of claim 3 , wherein the earliest valid video signal is available within 500 milliseconds to 1.5 seconds after electricity is provided to said rear backup camera. 5. The vision display system of claim 4 , wherein said video display screen is operable to display navigation information for viewing by the driver of the equipped vehicle other than when a reversing maneuver is being executed by the driver of the equipped. 6. The vision display system of claim 4 , wherein said video display screen is operable to display infotainment information for viewing by the driver of the equipped vehicle other than when a reversing maneuver is being executed by the driver of the equipped vehicle. 7. The vision display system of claim 1 , wherein said video display screen has a diagonal dimension of at least 7 inches. 8. The vision display system of claim 1 , wherein said video display screen has an aspect ratio of 16:9. 9. The vision display system of claim 1 , wherein said display device undergoes initialization at initial ignition on of the equipped vehicle and wherein, upon the engine of the equipped vehicle being started after initial ignition on of the equipped vehicle, initialization of said display device is delayed or overridden upon shifting of the vehicle transmission of the equipped vehicle into reverse gear to commence a reversing maneuver in order to give priority to display by said video display screen of video images derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera during that reversing maneuver. 10. The vision display system of claim 1 , wherein said vision display system prohibits display by said video display screen of other than video images derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera upon shifting of the vehicle transmission into reverse gear to commence a reversing maneuver until the reversing maneuver is completed. 11. The vision display system of claim 10 , wherein a user input is provided that, when operated by the driver of the equipped vehicle after the shifting of the vehicle transmission into reverse gear, changes from the video images derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera then being displayed by said video display screen to display of other video images. 12. The vision display system of claim 11 , wherein said other video images comprise zoomed video images derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera. 13. The vision display system of claim 12 , wherein the equipped vehicle comprises a trailer hitch disposed at a rear portion of the equipped vehicle, and wherein the field of view of said rear backup camera encompasses the trailer hitch, and wherein said zoomed video images comprise zoomed video images of the trailer hitch displayed on said video display screen so that the driver of the equipped vehicle can view the trailer hitch when maneuvering the equipped vehicle to connect a ball of the trailer hitch to a tongue of a trailer. 14. The vision display system of claim 11 , wherein said vision display system comprises a plurality of cameras comprising at least (i) said rear backup camera disposed at the rear portion of the equipped vehicle, (ii) a driver side camera disposed at a driver side portion of the equipped vehicle and (iii) a passenger side camera disposed at a passenger side portion of the equipped vehicle, and wherein said other video images comprise composite images, and wherein said composite images are derived at least from (i) image data captured by at least one of said driver side camera and said passenger side camera and (ii) image data captured by said rear backup camera. 15. The vision display system of claim 14 , wherein said composite images comprise bird's-eye view images. 16. The vision display system of claim 1 , wherein said video display screen is disposed at a rearview mirror assembly of the equipped vehicle. 17. The vision display system of claim 1 , wherein the traffic stop comprise the equipped vehicle being stopped in traffic. 18. The vision display system of claim 1 , wherein the traffic stop comprise the equipped vehicle being stopped at a traffic light. 19. The vision display system of claim 1 , wherein said rear backup camera remains electrically powered when the equipped vehicle is at a traffic stop and the engine is turned off under “stop and go” operation. 20. The vision display system of claim 1 , wherein video images derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera are displayed by said video display screen for no more than 10 seconds after shifting of the vehicle transmission of the equipped vehicle out of reverse gear. 21. A vision display system for a vehicle, said vision display system comprising: a rear backup camera disposed at a rear portion of a vehicle equipped with said vision display system; said rear backup camera having a field of view exterior and rearward of the equipped vehicle; wherein the equipped vehicle is operable as a “stop and go” vehicle with the engine of the equipped vehicle turning off at a traffic stop and then restarting again when the equipped vehicle is to commence moving again; a display device comprising a video display screen disposed in the interior cabin of the equipped vehicle and viewable by a driver of the equipped vehicle, said video display screen having a diagonal dimension of at least 7 inches; wherein said video display screen is operable to display at least one of (i) navigational information for viewing by the driver of the equipped vehicle other than when a reversing maneuver is being executed by the driver of the equipped veh
