A vision display system for a vehicle includes a rear backup camera and display device that includes a video display screen. Upon an engine of the vehicle being started after initial ignition on of the vehicle, initialization of the display device is delayed or overridden upon shifting the vehicle transmission into reverse gear to commence a reversing maneuver in order to give priority to display by the video display screen of video images derived from image data captured by the rear backup camera during that reversing maneuver. Within two seconds of that shifting of the vehicle transmission of the vehicle into reverse gear, the display device displays on the video display screen video images derived from image data captured by the rear backup camera. The video images may be displayed for no more than 10 seconds after the vehicle transmission is shifted out of reverse gear.

The invention claimed is: 1. A vision display system for a vehicle, said vision display system comprising: a rear backup camera disposed at a rear portion of a vehicle equipped with said vision display system; said rear backup camera having a field of view exterior and rearward of the equipped vehicle; a display device comprising a video display screen disposed in the interior cabin of the equipped vehicle and viewable by a driver of the equipped vehicle, said video display screen having a diagonal dimension of at least 5 inches; wherein said display device undergoes initialization at initial ignition on of the equipped vehicle; wherein, upon an engine of the equipped vehicle being started after initial ignition on of the equipped vehicle, initialization of said display device is delayed or overridden upon shifting of a vehicle transmission of the equipped vehicle into reverse gear to commence a reversing maneuver in order to give priority to display by said video display screen of video images derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera during that reversing maneuver; wherein, within two seconds of that shifting of the vehicle transmission of the equipped vehicle into reverse gear, said display device displays on said video display screen video images derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera; wherein video images derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera are displayed by said video display screen for no more than 10 seconds after the vehicle transmission of the equipped vehicle is shifted out of reverse gear; and wherein said vision display system prohibits display by said video display screen of other than video images derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera upon shifting of the vehicle transmission into reverse gear to commence a reversing maneuver until the reversing maneuver is completed unless, after the shifting of the vehicle transmission into reverse, a user of the equipped vehicle operates a user input to change to another video image derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera. 2. The vision display system of claim 1 , wherein said video display screen is operable to display at least one of (a) navigation information for viewing by the driver of the equipped vehicle other than when a reversing maneuver is being executed by the driver of the equipped vehicle and (b) infotainment information for viewing by the driver of the equipped vehicle other than when a reversing maneuver is being executed by the driver of the equipped vehicle. 3. The vision display system of claim 2 , wherein said video display screen has a diagonal dimension of at least 7 inches. 4. The vision display system of claim 3 , wherein said video display screen has an aspect ratio of 16:9. 5. The vision display system of claim 4 , wherein said rear backup camera comprises a CMOS camera. 6. The vision display system of claim 1 , wherein, responsive to operation by the user of the user input, said other video image comprises a zoomed video image derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera. 7. The vision display system of claim 1 , wherein said vision display system comprises a plurality of cameras comprising at least (i) said rear backup camera disposed at the rear portion of the equipped vehicle, (ii) a driver side camera disposed at a driver side portion of the equipped vehicle and (iii) a passenger side camera disposed at a passenger side portion of the equipped vehicle, and wherein, responsive to operation by the user of the user input, said other video image comprises a composite image, and wherein said composite image is derived at least from (i) image data captured by said rear backup rear camera and (ii) image data captured by at least one of said driver side camera and said passenger side camera. 8. The vision display system of claim 7 , wherein said composite image comprises a bird's-eye view. 9. The vision display system of claim 1 , wherein said video display screen is disposed at a rearview mirror assembly of the equipped vehicle. 10. The vision display system of claim 1 , wherein said vision display system detects a first ignition condition when the engine of the equipped vehicle is first started after initial ignition on, and wherein said vision display system operates different in the first ignition condition than in subsequent conditions or times during the driving period following the first ignition condition of the equipped vehicle up until the engine is turned off. 11. The vision display system of claim 10 , wherein the driver of the equipped vehicle at least one of (i) turns a key to start the engine of the equipped vehicle and (ii) pushes a button to start the engine of the equipped vehicle. 12. The vision display system of claim 10 , wherein, responsive to detection of the first ignition condition, said vision display system processes video signals emanating from said rear backup camera to determine an earliest valid video signal. 13. The vision display system of claim 12 , wherein, initialization of said display device and of said rear backup camera occur in parallel, and wherein, within two seconds after shifting of the vehicle transmission of the equipped vehicle into reverse gear to commence a reversing maneuver, video images derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera are displayed by said video display screen. 14. The vision display system of claim 12 , wherein the earliest valid video signal is available within 500 milliseconds to 1.5 seconds after electricity is provided to said rear backup camera. 15. A vision display system for a vehicle, said vision display system comprising: a rear backup camera disposed at a rear portion of a vehicle equipped with said vision display system; said rear backup camera having a field of view exterior and rearward of the equipped vehicle; wherein said rear backup camera comprises a CMOS camera; a display device comprising a video display screen disposed in the interior cabin of the equipped vehicle and viewable by a driver of the equipped vehicle, said video display screen having a diagonal dimension of at least 5 inches; wherein said display device undergoes initialization at initial ignition on of the equipped vehicle; wherein, upon an engine of the equipped vehicle being started after initial ignition on of the equipped vehicle, initialization of said display device is delayed or overridden upon shifting of a vehicle transmission of the equipped vehicle into reverse gear to commence a reversing maneuver in order to give priority to display by said video display screen of video images derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera during that reversing maneuver; wherein, within two seconds of that shifting of the vehicle transmission of the equipped vehicle into reverse gear, said display device displays on said video display screen video images derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera; wherein said vision display system prohibits display by said video display screen of other than video images derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera upon shifting of the vehicle transmission into reverse gear to commence a reversing maneuver until the reversing maneuver is completed unless, after the shifting of the vehicle transmission into reverse, a user of the equipped vehicle operates a user input to change to another video image derived from image data captured by said rear backup camera; and wherein, responsive to operation by the user of the user input, said other video image comprises a zoomed video image derived
