Methods of manufacturing electrochromic windows are described. Insulated glass units (IGU's) are protected, e.g. during handling and shipping, by a protective bumper. The bumper can be custom made using IGU dimension data received from the IGU fabrication tool. The bumper may be made of environmentally friendly materials. Laser isolation configurations and related methods of patterning and/or configuring an electrochromic device on a substrate are described. Edge deletion is used to ensure a good seal between spacer and glass in an IGU and thus better protection of an electrochromic device sealed in the IGU. Configurations for protecting the electrochromic device edge in the primary seal and maximizing viewable area in an electrochromic pane of an IGU are also described.

We claim: 1. An electrochromic device on a substrate incorporated into an IGU, wherein the electrochromic device has one or no isolation scribe lines, and wherein the perimeter edge of the electrochromic device is sealed between a spacer and the substrate of the IGU, wherein the electrochromic device further comprises an edge delete about the periphery of the substrate and a bus bar pad expose (BPE). 2. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein the electrochromic device further comprises bus bars, wherein the bus bars are obscured from view by the spacer of the IGU. 3. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein the edge delete is between about 5 mm and about 15 mm wide. 4. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein the BPE is substantially rectangular, the length of the BPE approximates one side of the electrochromic device, and the width of the BPE is between about 5 mm and about 10 mm. 5. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein a space between a bus bar on the BPE and the electrochromic device is between about 1 mm and about 3 mm. 6. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein the spacer of the IGU is between about 5 mm and about 10 mm wide. 7. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein the spacer of the IGU is between about 7 mm and 8 mm wide. 8. The electrochromic device of claim 6 , wherein a secondary seal of the IGU is between about 3 mm and about 10 mm wide. 9. The electrochromic device of claim 2 , wherein the bus bars are backset under the spacer between about 1 mm and about 5 mm. 10. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein a bus bar in electrical connection with the electrochromic device is located between the spacer and the substrate.
