Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The present invention, provides a flow cytometry apparatus for the detection of particles from a plurality of samples comprising: means for moving a plurality of samples comprising particles from a plurality of respective source wells into a fluid flow stream; means for introducing a separation gas between each of the plurality of samples in the fluid flow stream; and means for selectively analyzing each of the plurality of samples for the particles. The present invention also provides a flow cytometry method employing such an apparatus.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A flow cytometry apparatus for analyzing particles from a sample source, comprising: a flow cytometer; and a fluid moving assembly including a sample-extraction mechanism juxtaposable to the sample source and configured to extract samples from said sample source, said fluid moving assembly further including a single length of conduit or tubing extending, without valves or junctions, from said mechanism to and through said flow cytometer, said fluid moving assembly being configured for generating and moving, from said sample source to and through said flow cytometer, a fluid-separated sample flow stream, said fluid-separated sample flow stream including a plurality of samples extracted by said sample-extraction mechanism and separation fluid, the extracted samples in said fluid-separated sample flow stream being separated from one another by the separation fluid, said flow cytometer being configured to focus and detect said sample flow stream and to selectively analyze particles in each of said plurality of separated samples as said sample flow stream passes through said flow cytometer. 2. The flow cytometry apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said sample-extraction mechanism comprises an autosampler including a probe, further comprising means for exposing a probe tip of said probe to a jet of gas to remove liquid from said probe tip. 3. The flow cytometry apparatus of claim 1 wherein said single length of conduit or tubing is a high speed multi-sample tube. 4. The flow cytometry apparatus of claim 1 wherein said single length of conduit or tubing has an internal diameter of approximately 0.02 inches. 5. The flow cytometry apparatus of claim 1 wherein said separation fluid is a gas.
