A method for sequestering selenium is disclosed. The method includes contacting selenium with a stannous modified apatite under conditions whereby the selenium is absorbed by the apatite.
Opening claim text (preview).
What is claimed is: 1. A method for sequestering selenium, comprising: introducing a stannous modified apatite into a material, wherein Sn is present in an amount of between 0.1 and 0.5 moles for every mole of apatite; contacting the selenium with the stannous modified apatite under conditions by which the selenium is absorbed by the stannous modified apatite. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the conditions comprise a reducing environment. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stannous modified apatite is introduced into the material by adding apatite particles to the material. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stannous modified apatite is introduced into the material by introducing a solution comprising apatite forming constituents into the material. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the solution further comprises tin ions. 6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the solution is injected into the material. 7. A method for removing selenium from a fluid, comprising: contacting the fluid with stannous modified apatite to absorb selenium into the stannous modified apatite, wherein Sn is present in an amount of between 0.1 and 0.5 moles for every mole of apatite. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the stannous modified apatite after absorption of selenium from the fluid is removed from the fluid. 9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the stannous modified apatite is formed in situ.
