A new graphitic material has the empirical formula C 3 N 3 P and comprises triazine rings bound together by phosphorus atoms, and/or other 5- or 6-membered rings with various carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous connectivity. The material is made by polymerizing P(CN) 3 , for example by using a temperature of at least 220° C. and an elevated pressure, optionally as high as 1500° C. and 12 GPa.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of making C 3 N 3 P, the method comprising: polymerizing P(CN) 3 to obtain a bulk polymer having the empirical formula C 3 N 3 P. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the polymerizing comprises subjecting said P(CN) 3 to a temperature of 220° C. or greater and a pressure of two atmospheres or greater. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein said temperature is at least 400° C. 4. The method of claim 2 , wherein said pressure is at least 20,000 pounds per square inch. 5. The method of claim 2 , wherein said pressure is at least 10 GPa. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said bulk polymer comprises triazine rings bound together by phosphorus atoms. 7. A material comprising a polymer having the empirical formula C 3 N 3 P and comprising 5- or 6-membered rings with various carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous connectivity. 8. The material of claim 7 , having a graphitic form. 9. The material of claim 7 , having a nanocrystalline form. 10. The material of claim 7 , consisting primarily of triazine rings bound together by phosphorus atoms. 11. A material comprising a polymer having the empirical formula C 3 N 3 P and comprising triazine rings bound together by phosphorus atoms, wherein the material consists primarily of nanoscale sheets of the polymer. 12. The material of claim 11 , further consisting primarily of said triazine rings bound together by phosphorus atoms.
