Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A plastic tub for a washing machine includes a cylindrical casing; and an end face wall sealing the cylindrical casing. The end face including a bearing mount for a shaft of a laundry drum and radially-aligned reinforcing ribs molded into the end face wall. The reinforcing ribs begin at the bearing mount and branch in a Y-shape along their radial extent.

What is claimed is: 1. A plastic tub for a washing machine having a front opening for loading and unloading items to be washed, the tub comprising: a plastic cylindrical casing including an end face wall formed to include a bearing mount adapted to receive a shaft of a drum rotatable within the tub; and a plurality of plastic Y-shaped reinforcing ribs integrally formed with said end face wall and extending radially outwardly from said bearing mount; wherein the end face wall through the reinforcing ribs comprise a continuous structure of the same material composition. 2. The plastic tub of claim 1 wherein said plurality of Y-shaped reinforcing ribs are arranged symmetrically about said bearing mount. 3. The plastic tub of claim 1 wherein said plurality of Y-shaped reinforcing ribs have respective nodes or branching points which, collectively, lie on a single circular line concentric to said bearing mount. 4. The plastic tub of claim 1 wherein said plurality of Y-shaped reinforcing ribs have respective nodes or branching points which, alternately, lie on a pair of circular lines of different diameters concentric to said bearing mount. 5. The plastic tub of claim 3 further comprising transverse ribs connecting said plurality of Y-shaped reinforcing ribs and forming a closed ring. 6. The plastic tub of claim 4 further comprising transverse ribs connecting said plurality of Y-shaped reinforcing ribs and forming a closed ring. 7. The plastic tub according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of plastic ribs comprise: a first plurality of ribs projecting radially from a central location, each of the first plurality of ribs having a first branching point, the plurality of first ribs branching into a pair of linking ribs at the first branching point, each of the linking ribs having an angle adjustment point; and a second plurality of ribs projecting radially outward from each angle adjustment point such that there are twice as many second plurality of ribs as first plurality of ribs. 8. A tub for a washing machine comprising: a plastic cylindrical casing; and a plastic end face wall sealing one end of the plastic cylindrical casing, the plastic end face wall including a bearing mount for a shaft of a drum adapted for rotation within said cylindrical casing, and a plurality of plastic reinforcing ribs integrally formed with said end face wall, said plurality of plastic reinforcing ribs extending in a radial direction from said bearing mount, each of said plurality of plastic reinforcing ribs branching into a Y-shape, wherein node points of respective ones of said plurality of plastic reinforcing ribs are alternately arranged on two circular lines arranged concentric to said bearing mount. 9. The tub of claim 8 , wherein the branching of the plurality of plastic reinforcing ribs is symmetrical about said bearing mount. 10. The tub of claim 8 , wherein said plurality of plastic reinforcing ribs are aligned symmetrically to one another and at an equal distance about said bearing mount. 11. The tub of claim 8 , wherein a height, width and/or wall strength of said plurality of plastic reinforcing ribs and a wall strength of said plastic end face wall are attuned to one another such that rigidity of said end face wall increases evenly from an outer edge of said end face wall to said bearing mount. 12. The tub of claim 8 , further comprising transverse ribs connecting said plurality of plastic of reinforcing ribs molded into said plastic end face wall, said transverse ribs forming a closed ring. 13. The tub of claim 12 , wherein node points of said transverse ribs are arranged on a third circular line arranged concentric to said bearing mount. 14. The tub of claim 12 , wherein individual sections of said transverse ribs extend in a straight line between adjacent ribs of said plurality of plastic reinforcing ribs. 15. A plastic tub for a washing machine comprising: a plastic cylindrical casing, and a plastic end face wall sealing said cylindrical casing, said plastic end face wall formed to include: a bearing mount adapted to receive a shaft of a drum locatable within said cylindrical casing; and a plurality of plastic reinforcing ribs integrally formed with the end face wall, said reinforcing ribs extending in a radial direction from said bearing mount, each of said plastic reinforcing ribs branching into a Y-shape; wherein: a height, width, and wall strength of said plurality of plastic reinforcing ribs and a wall strength of said end face wall are attuned to one another such that rigidity of said end face wall increases evenly from an outer edge of said end face wall to said bearing mount; transverse ribs extending between said reinforcing ribs, molded into said end face wall and forming a closed ring; and the end face wall, through the reinforcing ribs and the transverse ribs comprise a continuous structure of the same material composition. 16. The plastic tub of claim 15 , wherein branching of said plastic reinforcing ribs is symmetrical about said bearing mount. 17. The plastic tub of claim 15 , wherein said plurality of reinforcing ribs are aligned symmetrically to one another and at an equal distance about said bearing mount. 18. The plastic tub of claim 15 , wherein individual sections of said transverse ribs are in a straight line between adjacent ones of said plurality of plastic reinforcing ribs. 19. A method of making a tub for a washing machine wholly of plastic material comprising: (a) forming a substantially-cylindrical plastic casing including an end face wall and a bearing mount adapted to receive a shaft; (b) integrally forming a plurality of plastic reinforcing ribs in the end face wall extending radially outwardly from, and symmetrically spaced about, the bearing mount, each of said plurality of reinforcing ribs formed in a Y-shape; wherein at least the end face wall through the reinforcing ribs comprise a continuous structure of the same material composition. 20. The method of claim 19 wherein, in carrying out steps (a) and (b), a height, width and/or wall strength of said plurality of reinforcing ribs and a strength of said end face wall are attuned to one another such that rigidity of said end face wall increases evenly from an outer edge of said end face wall to said bearing mount. 21. The method of claim 19 wherein step (b) further comprises expanding branches of each Y-shaped reinforcing rib into additional Y-shaped reinforcing ribs.
