Various enhanced features are provided for centrifugal casting apparatuses, rotatable assemblies, and molds for casting products from molten material. These enhanced features include, among others, tapered gate portions positioned adjacent to the cavities of a mold, extended and shared gating systems, and detachable mold structures for modifying the thermodynamic characteristics and behavior of molds during casting operations.

What is claimed is: 1. A mold structured for operative association with a rotatable assembly of a centrifugal casting apparatus, the mold comprising: at least one cavity having an entry port structured to receive molten material in a general direction of centrifugal force generated by rotation of the rotatable assembly; and, a gate in communication with the entry port of the at least one cavity, wherein the gate includes at least one tapered portion positioned adjacent to the entry port of the at least one cavity, wherein an average cross-sectional area defined by the at least one tapered portion of the gate is greater than a cross-sectional area defined by the entry port of the at least one cavity. 2. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tapered portion includes multiple tapered sub-portions. 3. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the tapered portion extends around substantially the entire cross-sectional area of a portion of the gate adjacent to the entry port of the at least one cavity. 4. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tapered portion extends a longitudinal distance from the entry port of the at least one cavity. 5. The mold of claim 4 , wherein the longitudinal distance extends from the entry port of the at least one cavity to a sprue chamber of the rotatable assembly. 6. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tapered portion extends around less than the entire cross-sectional area of a portion of the gate adjacent to the entry port of the at least one cavity. 7. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tapered portion defines a taper angle in the range of greater than zero degrees to 90 degrees. 8. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the average cross-sectional area defined by the at least one tapered portion of the gate is in the range of greater than 100% to 150% of the cross-sectional area defined by the entry port of the at least one cavity. 9. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the at least one cavity includes the at least one tapered portion. 10. A casting mold structured for operative association with a rotatable assembly of a centrifugal casting apparatus, the casting mold comprising: at least one cavity having an entry port structured to receive molten material in a general direction of centrifugal force generated by rotation of the rotatable assembly; and, a gate in communication with the entry port of the at least one cavity, wherein the gate includes at least one tapered portion positioned adjacent to the entry port of the at least one cavity; wherein the casting mold is a reusable casting mold; wherein an average cross-sectional area defined by the at least one tapered portion of the gate is greater than a cross-sectional area defined by the entry port of the at least one cavity. 11. The casting mold of claim 10 , wherein the casting mold comprises at least one of iron, an iron alloy, steel, and graphite. 12. The casting mold of claim 10 , wherein the casting mold is a reusable steel mold. 13. The casting mold of claim 10 , wherein a volume of a length of the gate is greater than a volume of an equivalent length of the at least one cavity. 14. The casting mold of claim 10 , wherein the at least one tapered portion includes multiple tapered sub-portions. 15. The casting mold of claim 10 , wherein the tapered portion extends around substantially the entire cross-sectional area of a portion of the gate adjacent to the entry port of the at least one cavity. 16. The casting mold of claim 10 , wherein the at least one tapered portion extends a longitudinal distance from the entry port of the at least one cavity. 17. The casting mold of claim 16 , wherein the longitudinal distance extends from the entry port of the at least one cavity to a sprue chamber of the rotatable assembly. 18. The casting mold of claim 10 , wherein the at least one tapered portion extends around less than the entire cross-sectional area of a portion of the gate adjacent to the entry port of the at least one cavity. 19. The casting mold of claim 10 , wherein the at least one tapered portion defines a taper angle in the range of greater than zero degrees to 90 degrees. 20. The casting mold of claim 19 , wherein the average cross-sectional area defined by the at least one tapered portion of the gate is in the range of greater than 100% to 150% of the cross-sectional area defined by the entry port of the at least one cavity.
