Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The connector for a card has a housing for accommodating a card provided with terminal members, and connecting terminals mounted in the housing and contacting the terminal members of the card. Here, at least one of the connecting terminals has a base portion provided along a rear edge of the housing, at least some of the base portion is embedded in a bottom wall portion of the housing, and a contact member forming a hoop along with the base portion. The contact member has a pair of spring portions connected to the base portion, a joining portion joining the pair of spring portions, and a contact portion connected to the leading end of the joining portion for contacting the terminal members of the card.

What is claimed is: 1. A connector for a card, the connector comprising: a housing for accommodating the card, the housing having a bottom wall portion, the housing including a plurality of conductive connecting terminals for contacting contact pads of the card when inserted into the housing, each connecting terminal being mounted in the housing; each of the connecting terminals including a base portion which is at least partially embedded in the bottom wall portion of the housing, each connecting terminal further including a contact member, the contact member cooperating with the base portion to form a hoop to define a central opening, the hoop including first and second spring portions and a joining portion, the first and second spring portions each having first and second ends, the first end of the first spring portion being connected to a first connection portion of the base portion, the first end of the second spring portion being connected to a second connection portion of the base portion, the second ends of the first and second spring portions being connected to the joining portion; each connecting terminal further including a contact portion for contacting a corresponding contact pad of the card when inserted into the housing, the contact portion being connected to the joining portion; each connecting terminal further includes a frame member, the frame member having first and second ends, the first end of the frame member being connected to the first connection portion of the base portion, the second end of the frame member being connected to the second connection portion of the base portion, the frame member extending generally around the contact member to define a peripheral open portion between the frame member and the contact member. 2. The connector for a card according to claim 1 , wherein a portion of the hoop and the contact member comprises an M-shaped profile when viewed from above. 3. The connector for a card according to claim 2 , wherein the end of the joining portion extends toward a front edge of the housing, and the contact portion is positioned inside the central opening when viewed from above. 4. The connector for a card according to claim 1 , wherein a portion of the hoop and the contact member comprises a W-shaped profile when viewed from above. 5. The connector for a card according to claim 4 , wherein the end of the joining portion extends toward a front edge of the housing, and the contact portion is positioned inside the central opening when viewed from above. 6. The connector for a card according to claim 1 , wherein from the joining portion extends from the second ends of the first and second spring portions toward a front edge of the housing, and the contact portion is positioned inside the central opening when viewed from above. 7. The connector for a card according to claim 1 , wherein each spring portion includes a first portion extending from the base portion in a first direction, a curved second portion having an end connected to the first portion, and a third portion connected to the other end of the second portion and extending in a second direction, generally opposite the first direction, the leading end of the third portion being joined to the joining portion. 8. The connector for a card according to claim 1 , wherein each of the spring portions has a fixed width and thickness along its entire length, and functions as a cantilevered spring. 9. The connector for a card according to claim 1 , wherein the housing includes a plurality of terminal-holding recesses disposed in the bottom wall portion of the housing, each of the terminal-holding recesses holding one connecting terminal therein, the terminal-holding recesses being formed such that the contact portions of the connecting terminals do not make contact with the bottom wall portion when the card is inserted into the housing. 10. The connector for a card of claim 1 , wherein the base portion of the connecting terminal is at least partially embedded in the bottom wall portion of the housing by overmolding. 11. The connector for a card of claim 1 , wherein the housing has wall portions which extend upwardly from the bottom wall portion to define an internal card-receiving space, the contact portions of the connecting terminals extending into the internal card-receiving space when the card is not inserted into the internal card-receiving space. 12. The connector for a card of claim 1 , wherein each of the contact members are oriented in the same direction. 13. A card connector, comprising: a connector housing for receiving a card having at least one terminal member, the connector housing including an internal card-receiving space and a connector terminal supported by the connector housing for contacting the terminal member of the card; and the connector terminal including a base portion for engaging the connector housing, and a contact spring arm portion for contacting the terminal member of the card, the contact spring arm portion being formed by a pair of spaced-apart arm portions extending out from the base portion which are joined to a pair of angled portions extending toward the base portion, the pair of angled portions are joined together to form a free end of the contact spring arm portion which includes a contact portion, wherein the base portion and the contact spring arm portion are interconnected to form a hoop with a central opening, the contact portion of the contact spring arm portion being aligned with the hoop and extending in a cantilevered fashion above the central opening of the hoop. 14. The card connector of claim 13 , wherein the arm portions have approximate J-shapes with curved bases and straight arms such that the contact spring arm portion has a M-shaped or W-shaped configuration when viewed from above. 15. The card connector of claim 13 , wherein the contact portion extends longitudinally with respect to the hoop central opening and in a direction toward the base portion. 16. The card connector of claim 13 , wherein the angled portions are joined together along a longitudinal axis of the connector terminal. 17. The card connector of claim 13 , wherein the base portion of the connector terminal has an approximate U-shape. 18. The card connector of claim 17 , wherein the base portion has a central slot that forms part of the hoop and at least a portion of the contact spring arm portion extends over the central slot of the base portion. 19. A connector for a card, the connector comprising: a housing for accommodating the card, the card including a plurality of conductive terminal members, the housing supporting a plurality of conductive connecting terminals for contacting the card terminal members when the card is inserted into the housing, each connecting terminal being mounted in the housing; each of the connecting terminals including a base portion disposed in a bottom wall portion of the housing, each of the connecting terminals further including a contact member, the terminals each including a pair of spring portions connected to the base portion at first ends thereof, and a joining portion that joins the pair of spring portions together at second ends thereof, each connecting terminal further including a contact portion for contacting a corresponding terminal member of the card when inserted into the housing, the contact portion being connected to an end of the joining portion; and, each spring portion includes a first portion extending from the base portion in one direction, a curved second portion having one end connect
