Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

This invention relates to cyanoacrylate-containing compositions that include, in addition to the cyanoacrylate component, a polybutylmethacrylate-polymethylmethacrylate copolymer. The inventive cyanoacrylate compositions load up to nearly a threefold increase of polybutylmethacrylate-polymethylmethacrylate copolymer over conventional polymethylmethacrylate and cured products of the inventive cyanoacrylate compositions demonstrate improved flexibility in terms of modulus (at comparable loading levels as well as increased loading levels compared to conventional polymethylmethacrylate) without compromising stability, fixture time or tensile shear strength.

1 - 17 . (canceled) 18 . A cyanoacrylate composition comprising (a) a cyanoacrylate component, (b) a polybutylmethacrylate-polymethylmethacrylate copolymer having a molecular weight below 100,000 Mn, and (c) one or more of a thixotrope, a gelling agent, a thickener, an accelerator, a shock resistance conferring agent, a thermal resistance conferring agent, and a humidity resistance conferring agent. 19 . The composition according to claim 18 , wherein the thixotrope is a fumed silica. 20 . The composition according to claim 18 , wherein the accelerator is selected from the group consisting of calixarene, oxacalixarene, silacrown, cyclodextrin, crown ether, polyethyleneglycol) di(meth)acrylate, ethoxylated hydric compound, and combinations thereof. 21 . The composition according to claim 18 , further comprising a stabilizing amount of an acidic stabilizer and a free radical inhibitor. 22 . Reaction products of the composition according to claim 1 . 23 . A method of bonding together two substrates, comprising the steps of: applying a cyanoacrylate composition according to claim 18 , to at least one of the substrates, and mating together the substrates for a time sufficient to permit the composition to fixture. 24 . A method of preparing a cyanoacrylate composition according to claim 18 , comprising the steps of: providing a cyanoacrylate component, and combining therewith with mixing a polybutylmethacrylate-polymethylmethacrylate copolymer. 25 . The composition according to claim 16 , wherein the polybutylmethacrylate-polymethylmethacrylate copolymer has a molecular weight of about 60,000 Mn. 26 . The composition according to claim 18 , wherein the polybutylmethacrylate-polymethylmethacrylate copolymer is present in an amount up to about 50 percent by weight of the total composition. 27 . The composition according to claim 18 , wherein the polybutylmethacrylate-polymethylmethacrylate copolymer is present in an amount in the range of about 2 percent by weight to about 45 percent by weight of the total composition. 28 . The composition according to claim 18 , wherein the polybutylmethacrylate-polymethylmethacrylate copolymer is present in an amount of about 20 percent by weight of the total composition. 29 . The composition according to claim 18 , wherein the composition is flowable at room temperature. 30 . The composition according to claim 18 , wherein the composition has a viscosity up to about 175,000 mPa·s. 31 . The composition according to claim 18 , wherein the polybutylmethacrylate-polymethylmethacrylate copolymer is present in an amount up to about 50 percent by weight of the total composition and a viscosity up to about 175,000 mPa·s.
