Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Described are embodiments that include methods and devices for separating components from multi-component fluids. Embodiments may involve use of separation vessels and movement of components into and out of separation vessels through ports. Embodiments may involve the separation of plasma from whole blood. Also described are embodiments that include methods and devices for positioning portions, e.g., loops, of disposables in medical devices. Embodiments may involve use of surfaces for automatically guiding loops to position them into a predetermined position.

What is claimed is: 1 . A soft cassette comprising: a housing having a first port and a second port; a first flowpath defined by the housing and configured to permit fluid flow therein and to selectively fluidly connect the first port to the second port; a second flowpath defined by the housing and configured to permit fluid to flow therein and to selectively fluidly connect the first port to the second port; and at least one valve controlling fluid flow through at least one of the first flowpath and the second flowpath. 2 . The soft cassette of claim 1 , wherein the at least one valve includes at least one magnet. 3 . The soft cassette of claim 1 , wherein the at least one valve is a first fluid control valve disposed adjacent to the first port. 4 . The soft cassette of claim 1 , wherein the at least one valve is a second fluid control valve disposed adjacent an inlet to the first flowpath. 5 . The soft cassette of claim 1 , wherein the at least one valve is a third fluid control valve disposed adjacent an inlet to the second flowpath. 6 . The soft cassette of claim 5 , wherein the third fluid control valve is a draw valve. 7 . The soft cassette of claim 1 , wherein the at least one valve includes one or more of: a first fluid control valve disposed adjacent to the first port; a second fluid control valve disposed adjacent to a first inlet to the first flowpath; or a third fluid control valve disposed adjacent to a second inlet to the second flowpath. 8 . The soft cassette of claim 7 , wherein the at least one valve is configured to have a first operational mode of being fully open and a second operational mode of being fully closed. 9 . The soft cassette of claim 7 , wherein the at least one valve is configured to have a first operational mode of being partially open and a second operational mode of being fully closed. 10 . The soft cassette of claim 1 , wherein the at least one valve is selected from the group consisting of: a solenoid valve, a linearly actuated valve, a pinch valve, a clamp valve, a tubing valve, other actuatable valve, and combinations thereof. 11 . The soft cassette of claim 1 , wherein the housing is a flexible housing. 12 . The soft cassette of claim 1 , wherein the housing includes a material selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), plasticized-PVC, polyethylene, ethylene with vinyl acetate (EVA), rubber, silicone, thermoplastics, thermoplastic elastomers, copolymers, and combinations thereof. 13 . The soft cassette of claim 12 , wherein the housing is manufactured by a process selected from the group consisting of: molding, rotomolding, casting, injection molding, or combinations thereof. 14 .
