The invention relates to a functional wound dressing being able to detect and indicate the state of the wound, in particular with regard to an infection which is reported to be frequently associated with poorly healing wounds, such as chronic wounds. The present wound dressing can be used in moist wound healing and contains a substance being able to absorb wound exudate from the wound and to provide moisture to the wound.

A wound dressing comprising: a) a hydrogel layer able to be orientated facing towards the wound, b) a layer comprising a pH-sensitive polymer, and c) one or more compartment(s) comprising carrier containing fluorescent dye, wherein each compartment c) is placed in layer b), and wherein layer b) comprises one or more recesses opposite the wound, wherein in said one or more recesses the one or more compartment(s) c) are embedded. 16 . The wound dressing according to claim 15 , wherein the hydrogel is a polyurethane-based hydrogel. 17 . The wound dressing according to claim 15 , wherein the solubility of the pH-sensitive polymer at a pH value of 4 is less than at a pH value of 8. 18 . The wound dressing according to claim 15 , wherein the solubility of the pH-sensitive polymer at 20° C. in an aqueous solution at a pH of 6 is less than 0.1 mg/min/g. 19 . The wound dressing according to claim 18 , wherein the solubility of the pH-sensitive polymer at 20° C. in an aqueous solution at a pH of 8 is more than 1 mg/min/g. 20 . The wound dressing according to claim 15 , wherein the solubility of the pH-sensitive polymer at 20° C. in an aqueous solution at a pH of 8 is more than 1 mg/min/g. 21 . The wound dressing according to claim 15 , wherein the pH-sensitive polymer is a (methyl acrylate-methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid) copolymer. 22 . The wound dressing according to claim 15 , wherein layer b) further comprises a plasticizer. 23 . The wound dressing according to claim 15 , wherein the carrier is of the same material as the hydrogel or the pH-sensitive polymer. 24 . The wound dressing according to claim 15 , wherein the carrier is a polymer selected from polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, polyethylene-polypropylene glycol copolymer, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, methylcellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and mixtures thereof. 25 . The wound dressing according to claim 15 , wherein the carrier is polyvinyl alcohol. 26 . The wound dressing according to claim 15 , wherein the fluorescent dye belongs to the group of xanthenes bearing at least one hydroxy group. 27 . The wound dressing according to claim 15 , wherein the fluorescent dye is fluorescein or carboxy fluorescein. 28 . The wound dressing according to claim 15 , wherein the carrier contains a buffer and/or one or more therapeutic substance(s). 29 . A method for preparing a layer comprising a pH-sensitive polymer and one or more compartment(s) comprising carrier containing fluorescent dye, wherein each compartment is embedded in the layer comprising the pH-sensitive polymer, comprising the steps of: (i) providing a layer comprising a pH-sensitive polymer and having one or more recess(es), (ii) adding a solution comprising precursor carrier and fluorescent dye into the recess(es) of the layer from step (i), and (iii) hardening the carrier. 30 . A method of treating a wound comprising the step of applying to the wound a compartment comprising carrier containing fluorescent dye, wherein said compartment is placed in or on a pH-sensitive polymer as an infection indicator for wounds.
