Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An external defibrillator system is provided. The system includes: a graphical display; one or more sensors for obtaining data regarding chest compressions performed on a patient; and a controller configured to display on the graphical display numeric values for depth and/or rate of the chest compressions based upon the data from the one or more sensors. A method for using an external defibrillator including the steps of: obtaining data regarding chest compressions performed on a patient; and displaying on a graphical display screen of the defibrillator numeric values for depth and/or rate of the chest compressions based upon the data is also provided.

What is claimed is: 1 . A medical system for assisting in the administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation to a patient, the system comprising: a display; a motion sensor comprised in a housing configured to be placed on the patient's sternum for obtaining motion data comprising at least one of acceleration, velocity and displacement of the sternum as a result of chest compressions performed on the patient; a processor configured to: determine whether chest compressions are being administered to the patient based at least in part on the obtained motion data, and determine whether the patient's chest is being fully released during chest compressions based on the obtained motion data; and a controller configured to: modify the display based on the determination of whether chest compressions are being administered to the patient, and provide on the modified display a visual indication of whether the patient's chest is being fully released during chest compressions. 2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the motion sensor comprises an accelerometer. 3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to calculate at least one of sternal displacement and compression rate based on the obtained motion data. 4 . The system of claim 3 , wherein the processor is configured to compare the sternal displacement to a predetermined maximum acceptable sternal displacement value and a predetermined minimum acceptable sternal displacement value for sternal displacement. 5 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the controller is configured to provide on the modified display a visual indication of when the determined sternal displacement is above the predetermined maximum acceptable sternal displacement value or when the determined sternal displacement is below the predetermined minimum acceptable sternal displacement value. 6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the visual indication comprises highlighting of the numerical value of the unit length of the determined sternal displacement. 7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the highlighting of the numerical value of the unit length of sternal displacement comprises changing a color of the numerical value of the unit length of the determined sternal displacement. 8 . The system of claim 3 , wherein controller is configured to provide on the modified display one or more numeric values of a unit length of the determined sternal displacement during chest compressions. 9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the modified display includes an automatic addition of the one or more numeric values of a unit length of the determined sternal displacement during chest compressions based on the determination of the presence of chest compressions being administered to the patient. 10 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the displayed numeric values have at least two significant figures and a resolution of less than an inch. 11 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to compare the compression rate to a predetermined maximum acceptable rate value and a predetermined minimum acceptable rate value and provide a visual indication of when the compression rate is above the predetermined maximum acceptable rate value or below the predetermined minimum acceptable rate value. 12 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the processor is configured to compare the compression rate to a predetermined maximum acceptable rate value and a predetermined minimum acceptable rate value and provide a visual indication of when the compression rate is above the predetermined maximum acceptable rate value or below the predetermined minimum acceptable rate value. 13 . The system of claim 3 , wherein the controller is configured to provide on the modified display one or more numeric values for compression rate. 14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the modified display includes an automatic addition of the one or more numeric values for compression rate based on the determination of the presence of chest compressions being administered to the patient. 15 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the processor is configured to estimate an overall quality of chest compressions performed on the patient based on at least one of the comparison of the sternal displacement to the predetermined maximum acceptable sternal displacement value and the predetermined minimum acceptable sternal displacement value for sternal displacement, and the comparison of the compression rate to the predetermined maximum acceptable rate value and the predetermined minimum acceptable rate value. 16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the controller is configured to provide on the modified display a visual indication of the estimated overall quality of chest compressions performed on the patient. 17 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the modified display includes an automatic addition of CPR information on the display based on the determination of the presence of chest compressions being administered to the patient. 18 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the modified display includes an automatic removal of CPR information from the display based on the determination of the absence of chest compressions being administered to the patient. 19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the modified display includes an indication that chest compressions should be administered to the patient. 20 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the modified display includes an indication of an idle time since chest compressions were last detected. 21 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more electrodes for receiving information about the patient's heart activity, and wherein the controller is configured to display on the modified display an electrocardiogram trace of the patient. 22 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to display an unfiltered electrocardiogram, determine that chest compressions have commenced on the patient, and subsequently display a filtered electrocardiogram.
