Processes and systems for making a poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles are provided. The processes and systems described herein utilize one or more methods, including, for example, slurry dilution and/or filtration of various process streams, to optimize the transport and recovery of the poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles. Systems and processes described herein facilitate increased production of the final resin product by minimizing product loss and maximizing on-line operation time and production flexibility.

What is claimed is: 1 . A process for producing a poly(vinyl acetal) resin, said process comprising: (a) reacting a poly(vinyl alcohol) and an aldehyde in a reaction zone to produce poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles; (b) contacting at least a portion of said poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles with a wash liquid in a wash zone; (c) recovering a substantial portion of said poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles from a liquid phase comprising at least a portion of said wash liquid using at least one solid-liquid separator in a separation zone, wherein said solid-liquid separator produces a solids-rich material and a solids-depleted stream, wherein said solids-rich material comprises said poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles in an amount of at least 50 weight percent, wherein said solids-depleted stream comprises separated liquids in an amount of at least 90 weight percent and said poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles in an amount in the range of from 0.001 to 10 weight percent; (d) filtering said solids-depleted stream using at least one filtration device comprising one or more cross-flow filter elements to thereby produce a solids-enriched retentate stream and a solids-depleted permeate stream, wherein said retentate stream comprises a higher concentration of said poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles than said permeate stream; and (e) combining at least a portion of said poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles from said retentate stream with other of said poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles downstream of said contacting step. 2 . The process of claim 1 , wherein said other of said poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles comprise poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles in said solids-rich material exiting said solid-liquid separator, and further comprising, drying the combined particles in a drying zone located downstream of said separation zone. 3 . The process of claim 2 , further comprising filtering said solids-enriched retentate stream in a second filtration device to thereby provide a second solids-depleted permeate stream and a further solids-enriched retentate stream, wherein said at least a portion of said poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles from said retentate stream that are combined with said other of said poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles comprises at least a portion of said poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles from said further solids-enriched retentate stream. 4 . The process of claim 1 , wherein said other of said poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles comprises poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles exiting said wash zone, wherein at least a portion of said poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles from said retentate stream that are combined with said other of said poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles are recovered from said liquid phase in said solid-liquid separator. 5 . The process of claim 1 , further comprising returning at least a portion of said solids-depleted permeate stream to said process upstream of said separation zone. 6 . The process of claim 5 , wherein said wash liquid comprises at least a portion of said solids-depleted permeate stream. 7 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the total solids content of said solids-depleted permeate stream is not more than 1 weight percent, and wherein the average particle size of the poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles in said solids-depleted permeate stream is less than 30 microns. 8 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the total solids content of said solids-rich material is at least 60 weight percent. 9 . The process of claim 1 , wherein said solids-rich material includes at least 75 percent of the total amount of solids introduced into said solid-liquid separator. 10 . A process for producing a poly(vinyl acetal) resin, said process comprising: (a) contacting a plurality of poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles with a wash liquid; (b) separating at least a portion of said poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles from said wash liquid to thereby provide a separated liquid stream and a solids-rich material; (c) filtering at least a portion of said separated liquid stream with at least one filtration device to provide a concentrated solids stream and a filtered liquid stream; and (d) returning at least a portion of at least one of said concentrated solids stream and said filtered liquid stream back to said process, wherein said concentrated solids stream, if returned, is reintroduced to a location downstream of said contacting step and wherein said filtered liquid stream, if returned, is reintroduced to a location at or upstream of said contacting step. 11 . The process of claim 10 , wherein said returning comprises reintroducing said concentrated solids stream to said process, wherein said concentrated solids stream is combined with at least a portion of said solids-rich material to provide a combined solids-rich material having a total solids content of at least 60 weight percent, and further comprising drying at least a portion of said combined solids-rich material in a dryer to thereby provide a plurality of dried poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles. 12 . The process of claim 10 , wherein said returning comprises reintroducing said filtered liquid stream to said process, wherein said returning is carried out in a batch or continuous manner, and wherein said filtered liquid is returned to said process during at least a portion of said contacting. 13 . The process of claim 10 , wherein the total solids content of said separated liquid stream is less than 5 weight percent and wherein the total solids content of said concentrated solids stream is at least 8 weight percent. 14 . The process of claim 10 , wherein said filtering is continuously performed for a filtration period of at least about 30 minutes, and wherein the permeate flux through said filtration device at the end of said filtration period is within about 25 percent of the initial permeate flux at the beginning of said filtration period. 15 . The process of claim 10 , wherein said filtration device comprises a multi-stage cross-flow filtration device comprising two or more cross-flow filter elements, and wherein the average velocity through each of said filter elements is at least 5 ft/s. 16 . A system for producing a poly(vinyl acetal) resin, said system comprising: a wash vessel for contacting poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles with a wash liquid, wherein said wash vessel comprises a slurry inlet, a slurry outlet, a wash liquid inlet, and a wash liquid outlet; a solid-liquid separation device for separating poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles from a liquid comprising said wash liquid, wherein said solid-liquid separation device comprises a slurry inlet, a solids-enriched outlet, and a solids-depleted outlet, wherein said slurry inlet of said solid-liquid separation device is in fluid flow communication with said slurry outlet of said wash vessel; a dryer for drying at least a portion of said poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles, wherein said dryer comprises a wet particle inlet and a dry particle outlet; a filtration device for further separating at least a portion of said poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles from a solids-depleted stream withdrawn from said solid-liquid separation device, wherein said filtration device comprises a fluid inlet, a solids-depleted stream outlet, and a solids-enriched stream outlet, wherein said fluid inlet of said filtration device is in fluid flow communication with said solids-depleted outlet of said solid-liquid separation device; a solids transfer conduit for transporting at least a portion of the poly(vinyl acetal) resin particles in the solids-enriched stream with
