Plated polymeric gas turbine engine parts and methods for fabricating lightweight plated polymeric gas turbine engine parts are disclosed. The parts include a polymeric substrate plated with one or more metal layers. The polymeric material of the polymeric substrate may be structurally reinforced with materials that may include carbon, metal, or glass. The polymeric substrate may also include a plurality of layers to form a composite layup structure.

What is claimed is: 1 . A gas turbine engine component, the component comprising: a first at least one polymeric substrate forming the gas turbine engine component and having a first at least one exposed surface; and a first at least one metallic plating layer deposited on the first at least one exposed surface of the first at least one polymeric substrate. 2 . The component of claim 1 , wherein the at first least one polymeric substrate is formed into a housing for one of a full authority digital engine control (FADEC), an induction head, a computer, a radio, an electrical actuator, a pump, and a valve. 3 . The component of claim 2 , wherein the first at least one metallic plating layer is ferro-magnetic. 4 . The component of claim 1 , wherein the first at least one polymeric substrate is formed into one of an instrumentation probe, a wave guide, a heat exchanger, and a piston rod. 5 . The component of claim 1 , wherein the first at least one polymeric substrate is formed into a diffuser case, the first at least one metallic plating layer being highly polished to reflect radiant heat. 6 . The component of claim 1 , wherein the first at least one polymeric substrate surrounds a central conductor. 7 . The component of claim 1 , wherein the first at least one polymeric substrate is formed into a support tubing, the support tubing having a central channel, the first at least one metallic plating layer surrounded by a first at least one polymeric layer, the at least one polymeric layer surrounded by a second at least one metallic plating layer. 8 . The component of claim 7 , wherein the first at least one metallic plating layer is a first at least one metallic plating wire. 9 . The component of claim 8 , wherein the second at least one metallic plating layer is a second at least one metallic plating wire. 10 . The component of claim 9 , wherein the first and second at least one metallic plating wire is in a spiral configuration. 11 . The component of claim 8 , wherein the first at least one polymeric substrate forming the support tubing includes gear-like teeth, the gear-like teeth including insulating channels between teeth, the first at least one metallic plating layer deposited in one of the insulating channels. 12 . The component of claim 7 , further including a connector bonded to the first at least one metallic plating layer and to the second at least one metallic plating layer. 13 . A gas turbine engine, the engine comprising: a full authority digital engine control (FADEC) housing including a first at least one polymeric substrate having a first at least one exposed surface; and a first at least one metallic plating layer deposited on the first at least one exposed surface. 14 . The engine of claim 13 , further including at least one gas turbine engine component, the component includes a second at least one polymeric substrate having a second at least one exposed surface and a second at least one metallic plating layer deposited on the second at least one exposed surface, the second at least one polymeric substrate is formed into one of an induction head housing, a computer housing, a radio housing, an electrical actuator housing, a pump housing, a valve housing, an instrumentation probe, a waveguide, a heat exchanger, a piston rod, and a diffuser case. 15 . A method of fabricating a component for a gas turbine engine, the method comprising: forming a first at least one polymeric substrate in a desired shape of the component; and depositing a first at least one metallic plating layer on a first at least one exposed surface of the first at least one polymeric substrate. 16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the desired shape is one of a full authority digital engine control (FADEC) housing, an induction head housing, a computer housing, a radio housing, an electrical actuator housing, a pump housing, a valve housing, an instrumentation probe, a waveguide, a heat exchanger, a piston rod, and a diffuser case. 17 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the desired shape is a cable surrounding a central conductor. 18 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the desired shape is a supporting tube having a central channel. 19 . The method of claim 18 , further including the step of coating the first at least one metallic plating layer with a first at least one polymeric layer. 20 . The method of claim 20 , further including the step of depositing a second at least one metallic plating layer on the first at least one polymeric layer.
