Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A wager-based game includes a base game and a persistent feature game. A player may be provided an award based on the outcome of the base game. A counter may be incremented in response to an occurrence of a triggering symbol in the outcome of the base game and associated prize is added to an accumulator. The prize is awarded to the player if the counter is equal to a maximum value.

What is claimed is: 1 . A gaming machine, comprising: a cabinet having an interior; a power supply, disposed within the interior of the cabinet, receiving power from an external power source; memory, disposed within the interior of the cabinet, storing non-transitory software, a plurality of virtual reel strips, and crucial data, each virtual strip having a plurality of symbol positions, each symbol position having an associated symbol from a set of available symbols, the set of available symbols including a triggering symbol, the triggering symbol having an associated numerical value, the crucial data including a plurality of position counters and a plurality of accumulators, each counter having an initial counter value and an associated counter maximum value, each accumulator having an associated initial accumulator value; a display mounted in the cabinet and being electrically coupled to, and receiving power from the power supply, the display configured to display a grid having a plurality of cells arranged in a plurality of columns, each column having an associated position counter and an associated accumulator, a graphic representation of each position counter and each accumulator being displayed above a respective column, one of the virtual reel strips being associated with one of the columns; and, a controller, including a processor, disposed within the interior of the cabinet and being coupled to the power supply, the display, and the memory, the non-transitory software controls the processor to: access the memory to read data associated with the virtual reel strips, render the virtual reel strips in the grid on the display, wherein the virtual reel strips are animated to spin and stop to display an outcome, the outcome including a stop position associated with each virtual reel strip on the associated column resulting in a symbol in each cell of the grid, display, on the display, the graphic representation of each position counter with the respective initial counter value and each accumulator on the display to the respective initial accumulator value, and, modify, on the display, the graphic representation of at least one position counter and associated accumulator on the display to reflect a respective current counter value and a respective current accumulator value in the respective position counter and accumulator, wherein the respective current counter value of the at least one position counter is set to a respective previous counter value randomly incremented as a function of an associated probability in response to occurrence of one of the triggering symbols in a respective column, wherein the associated probability is a function of the current counter value of the position counter associated with the column in which the one of the triggering symbols occurred, wherein the associated probability is from a set of possible probabilities, wherein at least one of the probabilities in the set of possible probabilities is less than one. 2 . The machine, as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the accumulator associated with each column is displayed on the respective graphic representation. 3 . The machine, as set forth in claim 1 , the position counter associated with at least one of the columns is different from another one of the position counters. 4 . The machine, as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the grid has first, second, third, fourth and fifth columns, wherein the position counters associated with the first and fifth columns are equal, and the position counters associated with the second and fourth columns are equal. 5 . The machine, as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the current accumulator value is equal to a previous accumulator value plus a random numeric value associated with each triggering symbol on each virtual reel strip selected from a set of available numeric values associated with each column. 6 . The machine, as set forth in claim 5 , wherein one of the sets of available numeric values associated with at least one of the columns is different from another one of the sets of available numeric values. 7 . The machine, as set forth in claim 5 , wherein the grid has first, second, third, fourth and fifth columns, wherein the set of available numeric values associated with the first and fifth columns are equal, and the set of available numeric values associated with the second and fourth columns are equal. 8 . A machine, comprising: a lockable cabinet including an entry that provides access to an interior of the cabinet upon unlocking; a power supply, disposed within the interior of the lockable cabinet, receiving power from an external power source; a non-volatile memory, disposed within the interior of the lockable cabinet, storing non-transitory software, a plurality of virtual reel strips, each virtual strip having a plurality of symbol positions, each symbol position having an associated symbol from a set of available symbols, the set of available symbols including a triggering symbol, the triggering symbol having an associated variable numeric value; a power-hit tolerant memory, disposed within a locked box within the interior of the cabinet and storing crucial data, the crucial data including a plurality of position counters and a plurality of accumulators, each position counter having an associated initial counter value and an associated maximum value, each accumulator having an associated initial accumulator value; a display mounted in the lockable cabinet and being electrically coupled to, and receiving power from the power supply, the display configured to display a grid having a plurality of cells arranged in a plurality of columns, each column having an associated position counter and an associated accumulator, a graphic representation of each position counter and each accumulator being displayed above a respective column, one of the virtual reel strips being associated with one of the columns; a controller, including a processor, disposed within the interior of the cabinet and being coupled to the power supply, the display, the non-volatile memory and the power-hit tolerant memory, the non-transitory software controls the processor to: access the memory to read data associated with the virtual reel strips, render the virtual reel strips in the grid on the display, wherein the virtual reel strips are animated to spin and stop to display an outcome, the outcome including a stop position associated with each virtual reel strip on the associated column resulting in a symbol in each cell of the grid, display, on the display, the graphic representation of each position counter with the respective initial counter value and each accumulator on the display to the respective initial accumulator value, and, modify, on the display, the graphic representation of at least one position counter and associated accumulator on the display to reflect a respective current counter value and a respective current accumulator value in the respective position counter and accumulator, wherein the respective current counter value of the at least one position counter is set to a respective previous counter value randomly incremented as a function of an associated probability in response to occurrence of one of the triggering symbols in a respective column, wherein the associated probability is a function of a current counter value of the position counter associated with the column in which the one of the triggering symbols occurred, wherein the associated probability is from a set of possible probabilities, wherein at least one of the probabilities in the set of possible probabilities is less than one. 9 . Non-transitory computer-readable storage storing software associated with machine, the machine including a d
