Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A mask system includes a frame defining a breathing chamber, a cushion provided to the frame and adapted to form a seal with the patient's face, and a shroud provided to the frame and adapted to attach headgear. The shroud includes a retaining mechanism structured to connect the shroud to the frame. The retaining mechanism includes both a taper lock arrangement and a retaining clip arrangement.

What is claimed is: 1 . A mask system comprising: a frame defining a breathing chamber and comprising an inlet opening; a cushion provided to the frame and adapted to form a seal with a patient's face; a shroud removably provided to the frame and adapted to attach headgear; and a retaining mechanism structured to connect the shroud to the frame, the retaining mechanism comprising a lug and recess arrangement, wherein the shroud comprises a main body and a pair of upper headgear connectors extending laterally in opposite directions from the main body, the upper headgear connectors being adapted to attach to upper headgear straps, each upper headgear connector comprising an elongated arm with a slot at a free end of the arm adapted to receive a respective upper headgear strap, wherein each elongated arm comprises a superior edge and an inferior edge, wherein for at least a portion of each elongated arm the superior edge is concave and the inferior edge opposite the concave superior edge is convex, wherein the portion of the elongated arm with the concave superior edge and the convex inferior edge is enveloped in a soft fabric sleeve or padded material, and wherein the mask system does not include a forehead support, wherein each elongated arm comprises a shoulder positioned to limit a movement of the soft fabric sleeve or padded material toward the main body of the shroud. 2 . A mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the shroud includes lower headgear connectors adapted to attach to lower headgear straps. 3 . A mask system according to claim 2 , wherein each lower headgear connector includes a clip receptacle adapted to removably interlock with a headgear clip associated with a respective lower headgear strap. 4 . A mask system according to claim 3 , wherein each clip receptacle is connected to the shroud via spaced-apart arm members. 5 . A mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the retaining mechanism is structured to connect the shroud to an inferior end of the frame. 6 . A mask system according to claim 5 , wherein the shroud includes the lug and the frame includes the recess. 7 . A mask system according to claim 6 , wherein the lug is in the form of a short bump that protrudes outwardly from an edge of the shroud. 8 . A mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the cushion is a full-face cushion. 9 . A mask system according to claim 1 , further comprising headgear, the headgear including at least a pair of upper straps, a pair of lower straps, and a cross bar to connect each pair of upper and lower straps, the cross bar adapted to extend generally vertically in front the patient's ear in use. 10 . A mask system according to claim 1 , wherein each elongated arm is resiliently flexible. 11 . A mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the shroud comprises a first opening that is positioned adjacent to the inlet opening of the frame when the shroud is mounted to the frame so that an airpath for pressurized gas supplied to the mask system passes through the first opening, and wherein the shroud comprises a second opening positioned superior to the first opening so that when the shroud is mounted on the frame, a gas washout flow path out of the frame passes through the second opening. 12 . A mask system according to claim 11 , wherein the first and second openings are positioned so that when the mask system is mounted on the patient's face, the patient's sagittal plane extend through both of the first and second openings. 13 . A mask system according to claim 11 , wherein the shroud includes lower headgear connectors positioned on opposite lateral sides of the first opening. 14 . A mask system according to claim 13 , wherein each lower headgear connector comprises an elongated arm. 15 . A mask system according to claim 14 , wherein each lower headgear elongated arm is resiliently flexible. 16 . A mask system according to claim 1 , wherein a central superior edge of the main body of the shroud is configured to intersect the patient's sagittal plane below the patient's forehead in use. 17 . A mask system according to claim 1 , the shoulder is located between the main body of the shroud and the concave superior edge.
