A tissue sample that has been removed from a subject can be evaluated. A change in speed of the energy traveling through the sample is evaluated to monitor changes in the biological sample during processing. The monitoring can detect movement of fluid with the sample and cross-linking. A system for performing the method can include a transmitter that outputs the energy and a receiver configured to detect the transmitted energy.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1 . A system, comprising: a processing unit including an acoustic monitoring device; a tissue preparation unit capable of (i) applying one or more substances to a biological sample; and (ii) performing a fixation process on the biological sample; and a computing device communicatively coupled to the processing unit and the tissue preparation unit, where the computing device is configured to evaluate a speed of the acoustic waves-traveling through the biological sample based on a time of flight of the acoustic waves, and wherein the computing device includes instructions which, when executed, cause the processing system to: (i) apply, using the tissue processing unit, one or more substances to the biological sample; (ii) monitor diffusion of the one or more substances through at least a portion of the biological sample using the acoustic monitoring device; and (ii) perform, using the tissue processing unit, a fixation process on the biological sample after the one or more substances have diffused through the at least the portion of the biological sample. 2 . The processing system of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is configured to evaluate time of flight changes while the fixative diffuses through the biological sample. 3 . The processing system of claim 1 , wherein the system further includes instructions for heating the biological sample. 4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the acoustic monitoring device comprises one or more transmitters each configured to output acoustic energy through the biological sample. 5 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the acoustic monitoring device further comprises one or more receivers. 6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the one or more receivers are configured to detect the acoustic waves that have traveled through the biological sample. 7 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a staining unit. 8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the computing device further comprises one or more communicatively coupled memories including one or more tissue processing protocols. 9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the computing device further comprises instructions for applying one or more stains to the biological sample. 10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more stains are applied to the biological sample according to the one or more tissue processing protocols. 11 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more tissue processing protocols are selected from the group consisting of baking protocols, diffusion protocols, fixation protocols, tissue preparation protocols, staining protocols, conditioning protocols, deparaffinization protocols, dehydration protocols, calibration protocols, and frequency adjustment protocols, decalcification protocols. 12 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a transport apparatus. 13 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more containers, each of the one or more containers including one or more specimen holders. 14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the one or more specimen holders include two plates that are spaced apart and parallel to one each other. 15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the two plates each include one or more apertures. 16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the two plates further include one or more barrier elements through which the acoustic waves can travel with at least minimal attenuation.
