Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An exemplary noise-reducing mechanism for door hardware includes a housing, a damper, and a stop. The door hardware includes a first component and a second component, and an operational movement of the door hardware causes relative movement of the first and second components. The housing is mounted to the first component, and the damper is mounted to the housing. The stop is mounted to the second component such that the stop engages the damper during the operational movement. The damper is configured to slow the operational movement, thereby reducing noise generated by operation of the door hardware.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1 . A trim assembly, comprising: a housing assembly, comprising: an escutcheon; a first base plate mounted to the escutcheon, wherein the first base plate comprises a first single-piece structure defining: a first plate portion; a first tab extending from the first plate portion and comprising a first tab aperture; and a first spring tab extending from the first base plate in a longitudinal direction, the first spring tab comprising a first edge that extends transverse to the longitudinal direction; a second base plate mounted to the escutcheon and separable from the first base plate, wherein the second base plate comprises a second single-piece structure defining: a second plate portion; and a second spring tab extending from the second base plate in the longitudinal direction, the second spring tab comprising a second edge that extends transverse to the longitudinal direction; and a first rod mounted in the escutcheon, wherein the first rod extends through the first tab aperture in the longitudinal direction and comprises a first end portion and a second end portion opposite the first end portion, wherein the first edge resiliently engages the first end portion of the first rod and thereby reduces rattling of the first rod, and wherein the second edge resiliently engages the second end portion of the first rod and thereby further reduces rattling of the first rod; a slider mounted to the first rod, wherein the slider is operable to slide along the first rod in an actuating direction and a deactuating direction opposite the actuating direction; a first spring mounted to the first rod and biasing the slider in the deactuating direction; and an actuator movably mounted to the escutcheon, wherein actuation of the actuator drives the slider in the actuating direction. 2 . The trim assembly of claim 1 , further comprising: a second rod to which the slider is slidably mounted; and a second spring mounted to the second rod and biasing the slider in the deactuating direction; wherein the first base plate further comprises an additional spring tab and an additional tab including an additional tab aperture; wherein the second rod extends through the additional tab aperture; and wherein the additional spring tab resiliently engages the second rod such that the additional spring tab reduces rattling of the second rod. 3 . The trim assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first plate portion is spaced apart from the escutcheon such that an open space is formed between the first plate portion and the escutcheon; and wherein the first tab extends from the first plate portion into the open space. 4 . The trim assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a damper configured to slow movement of the slider in the deactuating direction. 5 . The trim assembly of claim 4 , wherein the damper is engaged with the slider via a unidirectional engagement. 6 . The trim assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first spring tab extends obliquely relative to the first plate portion. 7 . The trim assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of the first spring tab and the second spring tab extends at least primarily in the longitudinal direction. 8 . The trim assembly of claim 1 , wherein the rod, the first spring tab, and the second spring tab are colinear in plan view. 9 . The trim assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first edge defines an end of the first spring tab; and wherein the second edge defines an end of the second spring tab. 10 . The trim assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of the first spring tab and the second spring tab urges the first rod into contact with the escutcheon. 11 . A trim assembly, comprising: an escutcheon; a first base plate mounted in the escutcheon, the first base plate comprising a first opening and a second opening; a second base plate mounted in the escutcheon, wherein the second base plate is separable from the first base plate; a first rod extending through the first opening in a longitudinal direction; a second rod extending through the second opening in the longitudinal direction a slider movably mounted to the first rod and the second rod; an actuator operable to drive the slider along the first rod and the second rod; a first pair of spring tabs extending from the first base plate in the longitudinal direction, the first pair of spring tabs extending obliquely from the first base plate and each spring tab of the first pair of spring tabs comprising a corresponding and respective first edge that extends transverse to the longitudinal direction, wherein each first edge is resiliently engaged with a first end portion of a corresponding one of the first rod or the second rod to thereby reduce rattling of the corresponding one of the first rod or the second rod, and wherein the first pair of spring tabs is integrally formed with the first base plate as a first monolithic structure; and a second pair of spring tabs extending obliquely from the second base plate, wherein each spring tab of the second pair of spring tabs comprises a corresponding and respective second edge that extends transverse to the longitudinal direction, wherein each second edge is resiliently engaged with a second end portion of a corresponding one of the first rod or the second rod to thereby reduce rattling of the corresponding one of the first rod or the second rod, and wherein the pair of second spring tabs is integrally formed with the second base plate as a second monolithic structure. 12 . The trim assembly of claim 11 , wherein the rod, the first spring tab, and the second spring tab are colinear in plan view. 13 . The trim assembly of claim 11 , wherein each of the first spring tab and the second spring tab extends at least primarily in the longitudinal direction. 14 . The trim assembly of claim 11 , wherein each first edge defines an end of the corresponding first spring tab; and wherein each second edge defines an end of the corresponding second spring tab. 15 . A trim assembly, comprising: an escutcheon; a base plate mounted in the escutcheon, the base plate comprising a pair of openings; a second base plate mounted in the escutcheon and separable from the first base plate; a pair of rods, each extending through a corresponding opening of the pair of openings in a longitudinal direction, each rod including a first end portion and a second end portion opposite the first end portion; a slider movably mounted to the pair of rods; an actuator operable to drive the slider along the pair of rods; a pair of first spring tabs integrally formed with the first base plate and extending from the first base plate in the longitudinal direction, each of the first spring tabs respectively comprising: a first base at which the first spring tab is joined to the first base plate; and a first edge opposite the first base such that each first spring tab (a) extends longitudinally between the first base thereof and the first edge thereof, and (b) terminates at the first edge thereof; a pair of second spring tabs integrally formed with the second base plate and extending from the second base plate in the longitudinal direction, each of the second spring tabs respectively comprising: a second base at which the second spring tab is joined to the second base plate; and a second edge opposite the second base such that each second spring tab (a) extends longitudinally between the second base thereof and the second edge thereof, and (b) terminates at the second edge thereof; wherein each of the first edges extends transverse to the longitudinal direction and is engaged with th
